Powerful, Long-Lasting OHVI Engine

The Generac OHVI (Overhead Valve Industrial) engine is the only engine designed specifically for generator use. Generators are often required to run for hours at a time, or even day after day. Engines adapted from other applications can overheat and may have shorter lifespans. It offers advanced heat reduction technology such as plateau-honed cylinders that lessen break-in time, plasma moly ring seals that help to keep excess oil out of the cylinder, and graphite piston inserts that provide a smoother surface for the piston to move against--all helping to contribute to a significantly longer engine life.

I ended up buying through local hardware store, as the price was a little better than amzn.
Great unit, tough, made in the USA. It seems to handle our house fairly well. I did my research, and this is the highest powered generator, before going the the next step up...5,000 - 5,500 watt. This unit and an older style 3250 generac, get the best gas consumption to power output that is available. I think its around .35 gallons per hour (at 1/2 load) The next watt up, comes in around .50 gallons per hour.
When the power is out, its additional stress to use 8 gallons a night for your generator. this unit lasts about 12/14 hours at 1/2 load on 4.5 gallons of gas. Its also nice, if you run it all night (heat), to not have to worry about it running out of gas.

Lets be real, if there is a real power outage, for extended time, and you cant get a steady supply of gas, this unit will burn about 1/2 the amount as the next size up and still power what you need. Who keeps 20 gallons of gas at their house anyway?
Hopefully it lasts forever.

Pros:
Sturdy (appears to be built to last), relatively compact to store, easy to move around, relatively quiet (see sound level measurements below), delivers above rated continuous power, engine starts right up, built-in power meter is handy, hour meter, GFI breakers, engine oil & extra air filter included. The price included the shipping and the shipping via freight was straight-forward.

Cons:
Instructions say that the unit arrives with no engine oil; however when I added less than 1/2 of a quart of oil it overflowed from the engine. Engine occasionally backfires after it is shut down.

I have not used this unit too much yet, but did try to bring it up to max continuous load with 3 hair dryers advertised at 1200 W, 1500 W, & 1600 W. Could definitely hear the engine strain a little as the load was increased, but it handled the full load just fine.

The noise from the generator was somewhat quieter than a small push mower. The sound pressure was measured as follows:
3' away: 88 dBA
12' away: 78 dBA
The sound level changed very little as the generator load was changed.

This is a great generator. I wanted a quality, compact and "Made in the USA" generator. This one is high
quality and very compact for it's power. Not too loud either. It fired right up on first try and it ran smooth.
Can't go wrong with this gen.

First of all I would like to say that I love this Generator. I bought mine from a local dealer, after reading about this new model from a popular mechanics article and award, but I think my review may be useful to others here. The setup of the generator is very easy and only took me two minutes. Generac includes your first maintenance kit with the generator (this comes in handy, I will explain later.) I got my generator about a two weeks before Wisconsin (where I live) got hit with a huge blizzard 24" of snow and 40mph winds with -5 F temps. We lost power for almost 24 hours - my wife, who was very annoyed that I bought this unit just before the holidays, changed her tune greatly when our house was the only one on the block with heat and christmas lights running. The Generator performed great the entire time. Since Generac includes the maintenance kit I didn't have to run aroud trying to figure out where to buy the oil filter as the unit needs to have oil and filter changed after the first 30 hours (break in period.)

Now to the features, this model surges to 5000 watts and is very compact and sturdy. The best feature is the built in power meter that allows you to know how loaded the generator is without having to add up the watts. Also, the power quality is very good with this unit and I had no problem running my computer or LCD tv throughout the storm. The noise level, which I expected to be very loud, was not bad at all. I had no problem standing next to the unit while talking to all my neighbors about why I still had power.

I am not too concerned about reliability because I bought a Generac because my father has had an older model portable for 13 years and my Uncle has had the same Generac Portable for almost 30!! Also, I have a Pressure washer with a Generac engine on it for 12 years and have never had a problem (lots of use too.) Plus, the unit comes with a two year warranty
