great little generator, January 16, 2012 By pamc

We unpacked out generator a couple of weeks ago and were very impressed with how it was packaged, but haven't had time to set it up until this weekend. This is our first generator so we really didn't know what to expect even though my husband did some research. We found the generator very easy to set up. It charged in only 2 hours (the manual said it would take 3). We filled it with oil, gas and pumped the primer a few times as instructed and it started right up with both the key and the remote start. We powered up some halogen work lights with no problem. We got it primarily as a power backup for a home office, so we like the inverter feature. I find it a little heavy to move around as I am 5'2", 110 lbs, so I might have considered spending a little more for the 2700 model with wheels. We're looking forward to giving it a real workout this winter.

Great product.

I ordered this generator inverter from Amazon. I was looking for something to use during any outage at home (1500w microwave or 1500w heater, etc). I received the generator 6 days after ordered in excelent conditions. I have tested it few days after with great success. It turn on just adding oil, gas and connecting the internal battery, then run the remote start!!! I never used the rope to start this generator. I connected the 1500w heater for about 5 minutes with no issue. This generator its a great option if you do not wanna pay 1k in a H or Y. (Just remember pumping the gas with the blue button before try to start for first time AND it is a little heavy, 30kgrs).

Fantastic portable generator
, November 12, 2011 By Eric

My friend owns a Honda portable generator and I wanted to buy one based on his recommendation, but could not afford it! Anyway, I picked up this little baby for about $500 less than the Honda and truly love it despite the other review that says it's hard to start. We had no problem starting it at the RV dealership that I bought it from and I have never had a hard time starting it since. It basically starts like a lawnmower...you have to push that little button to prim the gas, but you need to use common sense here folks...don't push it too much! Anyway, it's very quiet, not as much as the Honda, but it's so hard to tell the difference, it's marginal at best. I use it at RV camp locations and it's great! Love this thing! I even use it to power my paint sprayer in my back yard when my extension cord won't reach the house! You won't regret buying it! I don't!

Really good Generator......, January 4, 2012
By Paul D. Calabrese "Yukonhawk" (New York)

This review is from: Powerhorse Portable Generator with Electric Start - 9000 Surge Watts, 7250 Rated Watts (Misc.)
Update Jan. 4, 2012... I found out the motor for this generator is manufactured by a company called Ducar. I found this out by speaking with a customer Service rep at Northern Tool. HERE is a LINK to DUCAR'S website to help you learn more about them...... [...]. (I omitted the dots in the URL because when my review went live the link for the URL disappears.)I have read other reviews around the net and most likely this is a Honda clone. If a manufacturer meets Honda's stringent quality standards they will from time to time license their clone specs to other engine makers.

This my review from Northern Tool.......

"I received the Powerhorse 9000 on 11/4/11. From start to finish the order process and delivery were excellent. If you want to order one ask for Brenda. She was great and answered all of my questions Now to the genset.

First off this generator is one heck of a machine. It's powerful and very quiet for one this large. It is well put together. Even the welds on this thing are first rate. The materials are top notch, the paint job was perfect. So overall the fit and finish is top rate.

I assembled the wheels, handles and filled it with gas and oil all within 25 minutes. So the set up was easy. I brought it out of the garage and it stated on the first pull. In my opinion you really don't need to spend the extra bucks on the battery, but it's still nice to have if you choose to buy one.

I put a load on it once it warmed up for 5 minutes. The auto idle switch is great as it quiets the RPM'S down a lot. Once the frig started up the RPM'S kicked up and the genset ran like the wind. I then put the second frig on it and once again the engine jumped up and the genset ran with out a hitch.

Although this genset does not have an hour meter or gas indicator it's still worth buying. Just keep a log of when you start and stop it so you'll have a record of the hours. The fuel you can estimate how much is left in the tank.

Just be sure not to over fill the tank as it needs room for expansion and contraction.

I did a lot of research on gensets and it made my head spin. I looked at least 20 of them and narrowed it down the Generac 7500E and this one. The deciding factor was the auto idle on this unit. The Generac did not have that feature. Overall I am VERY impressed with this genset. 5 stars to Northern Tools for superior service and 5 stars for the machine.

One last note, the delivery guy told me he has the same machine that he bought 5 years ago. He said it has not given him one bit of trouble. Just keep the gas fresh with Sta-bil, start it once a month with a small load and follow the maintenance schedule and this machine will last for years. I hope this review helps you with your decision. Good luck." If you have any questions just lave them in the comments section here and I will answer them for you.

pretty high quality, December 14, 2011 By J Tria "gusser33" (Windsor Locks, Ct United States)
(REAL NAME)

During the October storm in Connecticut everyone was in a mess. We were without power, trees, poles and wires were down. Our only means of keeping warm was a portable generator, unfortunately, there were none around. I saw this on line and my cousin and i each purchased one, although i must admit, with great reservation. He ordered the 7000, i ordered the 9000. His was available for immediate shipment and mine was on backorder. I really felt uncomfortable ordering a Chinese product, both due to quality concerns and not Buying AMERICAN. But, after 8 days with no power, we took the chance as we didn't want to go through this again. My cousins came in first and honestly, i was surprised at the build of the unit. It was packed very well, no damage in shipping and was very substantial. After a very short assembly, we added oil and gassed it up. Second pull it started, ran a little rough for a few minutes until the gas flowed freely and then smoothed right out. Four days later, mine came in. the 9000. Assembly and quality were the same. Second pull it started. Mine is an electric start, but once i saw how easily it started i decided not to get the battery. I can only say what i have seen so far and it seems it is a well made product and should last a while. I had to throw food away from two freezers which cost more than the generator. I am having an electrician come in and wire it so i can run the whole house. I hope i never have to use it, but having the peace of mind knowing that my house will not freeze is well worth the investment.

Working like a charm, November 7, 2011 By Lawrence A. Bock "Larry" (Vernon, CT USA)
(REAL NAME)

Got this in a desperation move in the aftermath of Storm Alfred that hit NE with heavy wet snow on Oct 29, 2011 and knocked out 700,000 homes/businesses in CT. Once home it assembled easily. Since I was wired with a transfer lock and NEMA LP14-30 plug I simply plugged in and we had power to run a 1 HP well pump, gas furnace, 2 refrigerators, pleanty of lights, DVD players (no cable during the storm aftermath), and selective use of stove burner(s) or microwave and coffee maker. With 2 very young grandchildren with us, we were delighted with the performance. One day we left home in the care of an adult babysitter and the generator ran for 10 hours with mostly a light load on one full tank! Happy with this product so far. Have been using it for 5 days now, about 6-8 hrs / day and expect at least one or two more days before power is restored.

Survived Hurricane Irene, August 30, 2011 By Ned Flanders (New England USA)

I don't always give five stars. If I were to give four stars it would be because I should have purchased the more powerful generator but the HW5500 was the unit that fit my budget.

I purchased this item about a year ago. Until last week I had only run it occasionally to test it. Last Saturday we got hit with Hurricane Irene. We lost power for multiple days. That was the true test of this unit. I have a properly-installed load-side manual transfer switch that accepted the 30A plug from my HW5500. During the aftermath of the hurricane I was able to power my well pump, water heater, refrigerator, microwave, a window air conditioner unit and some lighting with this generator. Powering all these things, the generator used approximately one gallon every two hours. Check out the photos I posted of this unit in action!

When I purchased this item I had a concern about a missing washer for the wheel kit. I don't think that I lost it, but regardless, the manufacturer was forthcoming to *immediately* send me some replacement hardware.

At some other time I had a question about a fuel delivery concern. Specifically my question was relative to the carburetor. I was quickly connected with a competent technician, via email, who addressed my concern diligently and who was ready to take action to do whatever it took to satisfy my concerns. Needless to say, he did!

I admit that my purchasing decision was partially affected by the brand name Honeywell. I own a portable heater and a bathroom ventilation fan, both by Honeywell, both are great units. And of course we all know Honeywell's strong reputation with thermostat devices.

This genny is actually manufactured by a company called Northshore Power Systems and maintained by a company called Gardner. The people seem to be "in it for the long haul" and seem to want to "do right" by their customers.

I will close my review with a suggestion. When you own *any* type of power equipment, please make sure to follow the maintenance schedule included in the manual! With this HW5500 you should take heed to the suggestions to do the following:

- check the oil
- drain the fuel from the carburetor when storing the unit
- TREAT the fuel when storing fuel in the unit for some time
- use CLEAN and NEW fuel because fuel DOES go bad after time!
- check, clean and soak the air filter as instructed
- check and clean the fuel strainer in the fuelcock
- check and clean the fuel strainer in the gas tank
- BE SAFE WHEN WORKING WITH ELECTRICITY!

Enjoy!

Emergency Back-Up Power Solution, July 26, 2010 By Sean D. Mintz
(REAL NAME)

I researched generators heavily before finally settling on this make & model (Honeywell HW5500). We have a large detached structure on our property that consists of 4 rooms, 2 full baths, and a 3 car garage. The purpose of the generator was to provide emergency back-up power to the garage, guest apartment, and all appliances in the event of a storm (hurricane). The biggest concern was a commercial 230v A/C wall unit that was rated at 24,000 btu. Several of the larger generators could certainly power the A/C wall unit; however, fuel consumption, storage, and re-fueling becomes a logistical issue with the larger gas generators. We needed a unit that could reliably cycle the large commercial A/C compressor and run continuously for 8+ hours at a 50% load. The generator was ordered on Amazon with free shipping, no tax, and arrived in less than 1 week. The generator required about 1 hour to assemble the portability kit and came with clear instructions. My only complaint was there were two (2) washers missing from the wheel kit so we called Honeywell and the service department advised the items were backordered and would arrive in 2-3 weeks. The first test consisted of connecting the 230v A/C wall unit directly to the generator (this required an electrician to fabricate a custom plug and adapter). The generator successfully started and cycled the compressor which cools the entire guest apartment. Then we moved forward with installation of a Reliance manual transfer switch and power inlet. The generator can now be connected directly to a power inlet which feeds into a manual transfer switch connected to the electrical sub-panel that controls all the circuit breakers for the structure. The generator is able to power the A/C, refrigerator, chest freezer, water heater, TV, DVD, and all lights. We are extremely impressed and I would highly recommend this machine for anyone seeking an emergency portable gas generator.

New Purchase - So Far So Good, September 2, 2011 By MARK JOHN FREUND (WILMINGTON, DE United States)

The generator was delivered within three days of placing the order, and the box was in good condition with just a small punch hole on one of the side walls.

The unit is VERY heavy for its size. A couple of us got it into the garage and proceeded to cut the box away. We used a couple of 2x4 blocks to chock the frame to install the feet and wheels.

The oil filler access is awkward, but they do send a funnel with tube.

No oil is included with the unit, unlike others, so you will need a bit more than a quart of whatever oil you choose [I am using SAE 30].

Once all of the preliminaries are out of the way, and after filling the tank, the unit started on the third pull - not quite my Honda lawnmower or snowblower, but not bad. Multimeter is showing full voltage.

It is a bit loud, but it is used outside.

The only unusual thing [per the instructions] is that the unit did not want to start with the choke placed in the 'start' position - it started beautifully and smoothly in the 'run' position.

Now I hope I don't have to use it too soon.......

GREAT GENERATOR !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, December 27, 2011 By nd4412

First of all, I had shopped around the internet and this is the lowest price for this model of Generator. I cann't believe the SUPER fast shipping that I recieved (bought from Cabelas). After I ordered, I recieved the Generator in three days ! My hats off to Cabelas. The box was banged up, but the Generator was not damage. This is my fourth Champion Generator (upgrading each time and sold to friends for my cost) and I have been happy with each one. This generator with a electric start is a nice plus, Champion has never failed me with my power outages and it's amazing how much electrical units I can run with this size generator. I live in Western North Dakota. After last year Blizards, I found out the smaller sized Generators had not enough power for all my needs. This Generator has proven to run my gas furnace, fridge, freezer, and a few lights without any problems. I'm sold on CHAMPION generators !! The quality seems to be par with the higher priced blues and reds . The 3500/4000 watts Generators seems to be perfect for what I need and alot easier on gas ( 4 gallons @ 50% loads for twelve hours). Even though we have had a quite winter so far, I am comfortable knowing that I have my CHAMPION GENERATOR just in case. You can not go wrong with CHAMPION GENERATORS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WOW 150 lbs shipped free and in about 3 days, November 2, 2011 By Mellow

Purchased this Champion 4000 watt electric start generator from Amazon arrived in about 3 days free shipping and no sales tax. Took it with us on a camping trip a few days later, worked like a champ. The remote on and off is wonderful. With our old generator, we would have to go out and turn it off (usually at night) after watching a movie) or just let it run till it ran out of gas. We got pretty good at estimating how much gas a 2 hour movie would take! With the New Champion's wireless remote start, even 50 feet away, sitting in the back of the truck, all I had to do was press the button and it went off or on! All from inside the travel trailer! Didn't even have to get out of bed. This one replaced our tired little 1000 watt Coleman. I really didn't notice it being any louder. It seems to have a good muffler and enough power to run everything in the T/T, microwave, TV, coffee maker, and the furnace all the things you need when out in the wild, "roughing" it! With the highs at 50 degrees, didn't try the A/C. All this while charging up the boat batteries for the next day's fishing. I guess you can say I'm pretty pleased!!!

The Champion 46539 generator with remote is awesome. Finally somebody has designed an intelligent home owner type generator. You must get the remote starter to also get the RCM, the little brain that sets the choke, has a time delay for loads at start up, and an advanced load shut off when shutting off.
The hefty battery that came with it is recharged when running, and the remote uses a RF signal that has very good range and is not line of sight. It easily works from in the house.
The sound level is relatively quiet, and the engine runs smooth and seems to be reaonably fuel efficient.
I dare say look out Honda and other competitors, the day of quality assembly work from China seems to be here.
This tool is new to me and time will be the ultimate judge of quality. Did I mention the built in Hour / Hertz / Voltage meter?
