Preformed as Claims
, December 11, 2011 By WL (NJ)

It started easily and performed as claimed. The generator appears well built compare to others in this price range. Noise level is moderate. It would be ideal, if it has 220v outlet. I give it a 4 stars for meeting my expectation.

Works like a champ, December 11, 2011 By Daniel J. Kenny

t on a Monday afternoon and it arrived on friday. Standard shipping. Took about 15 minutes to set up. Putting oil in is a little difficult, but no big deal. Wheel kit makes it easy to move around. Puts ol and gas in and after 2nd pul started up. Great machine. A piece of me wishes I would loose power to see this machine work at it's best. Just having it gives me piece of mind.

Great generator

Champion 3500/4000w Generator - a perfect choice!, December 7, 2011 By Dan "Dan" (Putnam County, NY)

After experiencing multiple power outages in Putnam County, NY (2 to 3 times a year), I decided it was time for a generator. After viewing many reviews and doing cost comparisons I decided to purchase the Champion 3500/4000. I figured that I would need to run my boiler for heat (1200w), refrigerator(1500w), a few lights (50w - using florescent bulbs is great), and a TV (130w - 55" LED Sony). After viewing the watt requirements and doing some quick calculations I knew I needed at least a 3,000w etc... Thus, the 3500/4000 seemed like a perfect fit. Needless to say I am extremely happy with my choice. After utilizing the generator a few times it more than paid for itself (1 refrigerator full of food loss is more than the cost of this generator). I just wish I purchased a generator a few years back!!! For under $400's I have fully protected my house from power loss. Also, being a smaller generator (the guys at home depot suggested a 6000watt + generator - it's simple just do the math and you will know what is really required) is perfect because it is also portable enough that you can throw in the back of a car.

The only added expense you will need to pick up for this generator is the Twist Cables (L5-30P to regular outlets (5-20r's - I went with a 3' split)) if you want to take advantage of the full 3500/4000w operating capabilities. The single 5-20r located on the unit can only provide up to 2000w. You will need to use either the L5-30p or RV outlets to obtain the full 4000w capabilities. Again, really the perfect choice for my needs and clearly without busting my budget. Hope you find this helpful!

Champion Gas Powered Generator, 4,000 Watt 4 cycle, November 25, 2011 By RB

This generator was purchased for emergency use only when our power goes off, which doesn't happen often but does on rare occasions. For that reason, it has not been used as yet, but we were very happy with its size & the way it started off immediately.

We weren't pleased with the way UPS delivered it by just putting it on our front porch without knocking on the door or asking where we wanted it, which required my husband to get the hand truck & moving the generator down two sets of steps, two steps each, an incline & then to the area we want it.

We also ordered a "large" cover by mistake, which is too large for this generator, but will do.

Fantastic generator at a great price, November 16, 2011 By rocklayer2

I received the generator on time and set it up folowing the quick set up guide. First drained the little bit of oil that was in the moter and then filled with 10w30 oil. Then I started the generator and it started on the second pull! It was very quite compared to my old generator. I am a contractor and sometimes need to run a 15 amp electric air compressor on jobs and my old generator couldn't handle the startup of the electic motor. The new champion generator powered it with no problem and was even able to power a 12 amp saw with the compressor running. I also purchased the 30 amp twist lock to regular plug adapter from amazon. I am super happy with the generator and would strongly recommend it to any one looking for an inexpensive but powerful generator.

I was able to pick mine up from someone near by who underestimated their needs so we will be set for the next (too frequent) outage. Good manual but missing some needed info in the parts list: no part number for the oil drain plug or the plastic dip stick. These are two parts that can get lost or for the dip stick can break. In fact the manual exploded diagram has no parts listed for the engine, except the engine. We could not find this info on Champions web site either. Other than that excellent manual Champion.

Follow up. An email answer from Champion tech support provided the necessary part numbers and schematic for the engine. I would recommend everyone ask for these pages.

Unit fired right up. Powered all items in my 31.5ft travel trailer with no problem. I did not power the AC and M-wave simultaneously as I would not expect to do that during normal usage. The electric water heater, fridge, and AC all ran with no issues. The unit does drop some RPM when AC turns on but quickly recovers. Originally thought it was loud but for 375.00 .... cmon....lets be real. Very surprised that its not really that loud at all. Cant hear it from inside the house and its no louder than the AC unit of an adjacent trailer. Put it this way, with my trailers AC unit running, I cant hear it and its right outside my trailer. Very happy! Glad I bought it.

Yamaha EF3000iSE very nice compared to others, January 17, 2012 By atrox13

Pro:
1. Electric start works every time. 2 or 3 cranks it starts.
2. Very quite.
3. Nice fit and finish.
4. The gas gauge is nice.
5. The power is very clean and runs computers with no problem.
6. I like the fuel turn off valve. You can drain all the fuel from the carb. by just turning off the fuel and letting engine run out of fuel. I hope this helps keep the carb. from gumming up.

Con:
1. The wheels are fixed and do not swivel. This means you have to pick it up to change directions and roll it. This is a very heavy machine.
2. This thing still uses still uses a manual choke in 2012. Geez!
3. Like most generators filling the oil after a change is difficult and you have to pour oil in and try to not overfill. Not easy and messy. I would love to have a glass site gauge to check oil instead of opening the panel and dipstick.
4. The rubber pad under the oil drain plug is very hard to put back after an oil change.

Nitpicks:
1. At this premium price a hour meter and tachometer should be standard equipment.

Things to be aware of:
1. You have to fill the battery with acid when you receive the machine. The provided acid filler works well.
2. You will have to buy a special cable or socket converted to use the twist lock 30 amp socket. I paid $37 for a 25 ft 30 amp cable with 3 outlets.
3. There is no lock fixture or hole. So to secure it with a cable or chain you need to loop through the machine handles and that could chip the paint.

Misc:
I had intended to convert this generator to tri-fuel using a kit from US Carburation. They list it on their site and also sell the same Yamaha generators they convert for you. I ordered the kit but they said that the company had changed the design and it would no longer work. Very disappointing for disaster preparation.

Recommendation:
I still like the generator compared others because it is so low noise and fuel efficient in econo mode. I would recommend this for camping, home or rv use.

always reliable, October 5, 2011 By jmc

i own 17 of these one for each room at my house in Carmel Ca. and they work great. im planing on buying 10 more as back ups. you just never know when youll need more power. im going to ask my pilot if we should have one in my private jet. why not?

Proven, January 20, 2011 By Convinced
We use the product on an RV every year. It's power saver feature insures the unit will run all night keeping you warm or cool (if you remember to turn it on). Easy electric starts definately a plus in regards to children/family helping set everything up. In camping situations, everyone around you will be in awe of how quiet this runs. It is pricey but worth it. Must say I am curious about the higher power unit available now, but so far have never needed any more power. If you are looking for quality and dependability, this is your generator. We have been using this for 6+ years without complaint.

Yamaha EF3000iSE 3,000 Watt Generator
, December 12, 2010 By GBSrdh (LHP FL)

I highly recommend this product. I got this generator after Hurricanes Frances & Jeanne hit our state, knocked out our power for 10 days.
The first generator I got out of desperation, it was hot and we lost a refrigerator full of food...this generator was horribly loud & I knew it would be a matter of time before the neighbors complained. Thankfully I was able to sell it the following day and I immediately ordered 2- Yamaha 3000 generators, I own a duplex so the neighbor had to get one too.

Wow, what a huge difference! Even with 2 generators going at once it was much quieter than my vacuum cleaner. I was able to connect my refrigerator, TV, a standing lamp and a window AC (5,000watt) unit for nighttime use. When Jeanne hit everyone in Lighthouse Point FL seemed to have purchased those ear busting generators!

Needless to say I am very happy and pleased with my Yamaha generators. When Wilma hit in 2005 we were out of power for nearly 2 weeks and those generators came in handy. On a full tank (energy save switch on) they will last through the night 7-8 hrs. I would shut them down for the morning, refill the tanks and have them on in the afternoon.

You get what you pay for and these are excellent generators, very quiet, great for hurricane season and for camping, any outdoor events where you need power, it will do the job. Maintenance is easy, just like maintaining the engine of a car, you have to do the same with a generator. Change the oil/filter/spark plug and follow storage protocol.

Excellent Generator, October 30, 2010 By Bill (Fort Wayne, IN)

I am very happy with this generator, does everything I hoped for, and more. The hardest part was installing the battery, made me nervous filling battery with acid. But, following the instructions it went without a hitch. I thought they forgot to include the battery strap since it was not on the battery when I took it out of generator. But, I found it lying in the battery compartment way in the back. So check if you do not see yours, it is a rubber strap. Adding the oil is a little tricky, I bought a funnel that twist around for the job. The motor wants to RUN..... after gassing up I hardly pulled the cord and it took off. I let it run for 30 minutes to charge the battery. I shut it off, and restarted it using battery power, again it took off like a shot. In the mean time I installed a transfer switch on my furnace, a couple days later. Testing the generator on the furnace I hooked up the generator, again it took off like a shot. It ran my furnace with no labor what so ever. I am ready for the ice and snow this time. Last winter I was without power 4 days, no heat no lights, no fun. Oh, yes it is a little heavy, I can lift one end, but not the whole thing, but it is on wheels, so I can move it around my garage no problem. Kind of wish the smaller wheels would swivel, then I would not have to lift and move one end, to steer it around. Yes, it is expensive, but quiet and runs smooth and worth every penny. EF3000ISE

Have it for a month now...what a great machine!
(of course there wasn't free shipping for me) I still would have bought it.
Quiet, economical and its blue!
The electric start works great for my older parents.
I wish it was a 30 amp plug instead of a 25 amp, but it works where I need it to work.
Now our camp neighbors have some piece and quiet while we still have power to spare.

Plenty of power, May 18, 2010 By Mark Rivard
(REAL NAME)

I purchased this generator from a local camper dealer about 3 years ago so we could camp in the parking lot at our kids colleges. The electric start is a nice feature and if I was to buy another one I would get it with the remote START/STOP feature. I found a place that I can order it to add to mine. There is enough power to run one AC, any lights you want, TV, water pump all at the same time. Fuel consumption is very low. I haven't clocked the hours per tank, but we take it to a state part in Connecticut where there is no power at all and can get through 3 or 4 days on a tank full. There is also a option to add a propane fuel supply. This is also one of the quietest generators I have heard in the campgrounds. You can stand right beside the unit and have a normal conversation. I wish Yamaha would make a model to install in my 5er so I didn't have to load it into the truck. It's a bit heavy so I am going to add a hoist to my garage to help with the loading now that the kids are no longer at home.

So Far So Good, November 3, 2011 By MadJoe (Littleton, MA)

I received the generator on Tuesday, and unboxed it immediately, but didn't have a chance to get it put together and tested until Wednesday night. Initial impressions were good. It's an attractive unit, and appears to be built well. My only regret is that there's no 220VAC output, but for the price that's certainly not a complaint. One thing I noticed was that it had a very strong odor coming from it that I attributed to some sort of oil, or other petroleum based product that was likely used as either a solvent or to protect surfaces from corrosion during storage/shipment. Luckily it was only in my mud room overnight, and the kitchen didn't start to smell before I got it assembled and out to the garage.

The unit put together fairly easy, but the "quick start" guide was not as thorough as it could have been, so a little mechanical aptitude will help in getting it assembled with just the quick start. Otherwise, I would think the owners manual would have more detailed instructions, but haven't confirmed that. Once assembled, I checked the oil reservoir and found that it was empty (unlike some other reviewers) so I filled it with 1oz Mystery oil, and 19oz 10W30 dino oil. It overflowed a small amount, but I was smart enough to be outside when I filled it, so a quick wipe up of the generator and I was ready good to go. I took a minute to do a thorough look over of the unit, and inspect the wiring, etc.. It is well built for this price point. Everything was tight, and in excellent condition. I installed the spark arrestor, put a few ounces of fuel in it and gave the pull start a tug. It took a few pulls, but it finally came to life. It's a little louder than I would have preferred, but again, at this price point it really isn't a complaint. My only true complaint would be that the muffler is terminated in a way to allow for the spark arrestor to be installed, so I can't slip an extender pipe over it and vent it outside the garage for use. I'll just have to build a small shed for it, I guess.

Satisfied customer, November 1, 2011 By Bob K "Bob" (Ma.)

I live in New England and bought this generator in January of this year. We were having the worse winter I'd ever seen and figured it would only be a matter of time before it would come in handy. Never had to put it to the test until 3 days ago (10/29/11) when a freak snow storm knocked out power all over the east coast. 90% of my city was without electricity. I ran this generator for three days, sixteen consecutive hours each day. I never expected to need a generator for this length of time and was worried that it may not hold up. Fortunately it worked flawlessly. I was running a wood pellet stove, a few lights, coffee maker, toaster, and other small items. I didn't push it to its limit but for what I needed it for in an emergency situation it worked perfectly. The nicest thing about this item is its price as compared to other brands. That, along with all the other positive ratings, is what led me to give this one a shot. Fuel consumption was about two gallons after ten hours. I don't know if thats good or bad compared to other brands but I knew I could sleep through the night without it running out of fuel. One other positive note, when the generator arrived the air filter housing cover was broken in shipping. I called Champion and spoke with a customer service agent who immediately sent me out a new cover, no questions asked. Recieved the part in a couple of days. If you're looking for a good price and a dependable unit this may be the one for you.

Nice little generator, November 1, 2011 By zippy

Bought this generator after Irene left us without power for a few days. Starts easily second or third pull. Average noise about 70db (slightly quieter than lawn mower (72-75db). Powerful for size: I ran 2 full size refrigerators, 1st floor lights 4 x 60 watt, a coffee maker (about 30 min), electric for my steam boiler (heat), basement lights 3 x 60 watts, sony dvd player, samsung 32" lcd tv. Ran all of above for 10 hours on 3.5 gallons of gas. Pretty fuel efficient. My neighbor had a generac 6500 that used ~9 gallons doing the same tasks. I Hooked this unit up via reliance controls 31404b transfer switch and a 30 amp rv to bare wire cord.

Good Unit for the price, October 29, 2011 By Michael S. Naggar "Mike" (Temecula)
(REAL NAME)

The unit was delivered on time and the box was undamaged. It was pretty easy to assemble the wheel kit. Put some oil and file in it but failed to start. There was a wire not connected in the front. None of the instructions indicated what the wire was for. I connected the two wires and she started up. Unit is a bit loud but I figure thats what your going to get if you want a 4000 watt unit. For the price I think this is a good unit. I hooked it up to my air compressor and it work fine. So now I have a generator in an emergency. I just hope it performs when I really need it. No way to tell until the time comes.

Stop looking you have found the perfect generator, October 22, 2011 By Ted Fulton "Ted" (Malibu)
(REAL NAME)

I researched generators for days (actually weeks) and decided on this one. It was a good choice. I bought it for $399 from Amazon (before they lowered the price) At the current lower price it's a screaming good deal. It was delivered undamaged in a timely fashion, it started on the first pull and worked perfectly, absolutely zero issues. It was fairly quiet compared to others I have used. For the money and wattage rating you will not find a better generator. If you are not sure how many watts you need, google "Sears generator worksheet" (without the quotes). The worksheet will help you decide how big a generator you need. This generator however, beat everything Sears sold hands down. Lastly, do not buy the Coleman Cable 01912 25-Foot 10/3 Generator Power Cord with L5-30P Plug and 3-Outlets to go with this generator. The L5-30P plug does not fit this generator. (Yes, I bought the cord and had to spend 22 bucks to buy the correct plug to make it work) Lowes or Home depot have 30amp cords that will work with this generator.

It will get you through at a fraction of the cost, October 9, 2011 By ryan j frantz
I got this for hurricane Irene, and it lasted us 8 days without power. I ran a fridge, tv, ps3, cable box, computer, router, lamps, and a window AC unit on less than 5 gallons of fuel a day. It doesn't have the juice to run an oven, water heater, well pump (at least I couldn't figure how to hook it up to the pump), or washer/drier, but it will get you through if you're prepared. I would recommend this to anyone who is worried about providing for their family in an emergency and is on a budget.

So far, So Good!, September 24, 2011 By kjones

Our Champion 4,000 watt generator arrived in the nick of time-the day before hurricane Irene. The generator started up was easy to assemble, started up right away, and powered our massive refrigerator, a computer or TV, a lamp, and a fan. Also, the fuel economy was better for us than estimated in the manual. We recommended it to friends and family.

Quality and Value for the Money
, November 1, 2011 By average consumer
Bought this generator to replace a 4000 watt unit that was good but not large enough. This unit is a serious genset with quality components, not as cheap as generac's other consumer choices. The XP denotes the jobsite/pro line of portable generators. I think its quality and features compare favorably with much more expensive brands. The engine has pressurized oil lubrication (a feature you don't find in smaller gensets) and low-oil cutoff WHICH IS ESSENTIAL IN A GENERATOR! The foldable handles are very sturdy and the large wheels are very manuverable. I've got the E-model with battery/electric start, a feature that makes it easy starting for my wife/elderly father. As far as capacity goes, most gensets are over-rated. This one is not. I'm runninig this unit at at 6000 watts plus a 1hp water pump and this unit is having no problem keeping up. Gas tank is plenty large and will run 12+ hours at a reasonable load before needing fuel. Love the hour meter. Its also quieter than the 4000 watt genset I had before this one. 50 hours in and zero change. I've owned a lot of tools and have a very good feeling about this piece of equipment.

A note on generator size. I looked at whole-house standby units and decided not only could I not justify the initial purchase but the cost to run them during a power outage. A full-size standby generator will burn 1.5-2gph of propane. Add it up and that's close to $200/day. For that kind of money I'll go stay in a hotel and save my thousands of dollars. This size is perfect for what I need: Well pump, Furnace, Lights, and a few outlets. I've got a large house with both my parents living with me. I don't want them sitting in the dark or needing to climb stairs unneccesarily. The portable genset may be a little inconvenient but the cost savings is huge. If you have natural gas to pipe into then maybe the standby is viable option but if you need propane/diesel BEWARE WHAT IT WILL COST YOU!!!

I looked at Hondas and other high end gensets but couldn't justify the 3k+ pricetag for an occasional item. Then I looked at cheaper ones and couldn't convince myself they were going to be dependable in a meaningfull way. I think for the money this is an excellent choice and would buy again, but doubt I will need one for a long, long time.

Yamaha EF3000iSE 3,000 Watt Generator, December 12, 2010 By GBSrdh (LHP FL)

Robert, January 16, 2012 By RHK

Hyundai HHD7250 7250-Watt, purchased November 2011 came with a 15 hp motor even though advertized a 13 hp motor. Amazon made a price adjustment for me when the price dropped from $1095.00 to 880.00 from the time I ordered it to before it was delivered. Kudos to Amazon.com,great service The Hyundai generator appears to be solid and very well built, runs well with low noise level. My neighbors Generac unit is much louder, glad I got the Hyundai for that reason alone. Doing a major kitchen renovation and I asked the crew to used the generator for its power source, and they all thought the Hyundai was the best generator they used. No power loss, with lots of equipment being used while running two refrigerators. Very quiet compared to their power source and ran forever on a full tank of gas, though the unit is heavy (200lbs) was easy to maneuver around the job site. There are some issues, the printed manual that came with the unit and the online manual seem to give different information like oil to use, the unit came with a bottle of 10w 30. While the on line specks call for 40w I will be calling Hyundai about this. Made this purchase because of all the power loss here in north Jersey I feel this unit will handle all our power needs. Delivery was great. Scheduled delivery time was on the money It rained the day it was delivered and the driver placed the generator in the garage for my wife. At $880 I think this unit is a steal compared to other units on the market.

Hyundai HHD7250 Generator, January 8, 2012 By J.T.K. "Tony No Baloney" (Hebron, Ohio United States)

Product seems to be well made and functions perfectly. Starts right up and is fairly quiet when running. A great value for a generator of this size. Easy to do the minor assembly that is required. Mine also has a 15 horsepower engine rather than the 13 horsepower indicated by the description. The only thing that is uncertain of course is how long it will last. Only time will tell but there are no indications that it wont last a long time.

Hyundai Generator 7250, December 21, 2011 By Mike V. "Mike V." (Katonah, NY)

Just received my Hyundai generator from CEVA and it looks good. CEVA delivered it at 8AM and the driver was courtious and helpful. I assembled it in less than 45 min and started it up. It took a little while to fire up and I found the linkage to the choke had come apart. No big deal I hooked it right back up and ran fine after that. The pull start is hard to get at with the cover over the top but the electric start works fine. Does anyone know what type of transfer switch is recommended for this model (7250) ? I would like to hook it up to a few circuits in the house. Mike V.

Solid Generator, December 17, 2011 By Joseph M. Lopriore (NJ)
(REAL NAME)

Generator was delivered quicker than anticipated by CEVA. The package was a little dinged, but the generator and all parts were not damaged. It took me maybe 30 minutes by myself to unpackage it and attach everything. Connecting the battery took about 5 minutes. I first tested the manual start and it fired up on the first pull. I shut it down and then tested the battery start and it worked fine. I put about 3500 watts load on it and it barely flinched. It runs very smooth and is relatively quiet for a 13 HP motor. I had it running about 15 feet from my sliding glass door to the downstairs TV room and it was not very noticeable while I was inside. Obviously, time will tell how this holds up, but all the parts appear to be very good quality. For $880, this feels like it was a good deal.

We are ready, December 15, 2011 By JR Red

The generator arrived as scheduled. It required only minor assembly. It started on the first push of the switch. We are now ready for the next winter storm power outage.

wow, November 10, 2011 By Matthew E. Mccay
(REAL NAME)

First off, the generator is 15 horsepower and 420 cc. I was under the impression it was 13 horse, 389 cc. They must have made a change recently. Easy set up and pushed the button...fired right up. Wow. Hyundai impressed me from what I've seen with their cars and construction equipment, and that quality seems to have carried over to their generators. Smooth and quiet as a Honda, and that's saying a lot.
It started immediately, and was as quiet as my 7 horse Duro-star generator, and quieter than my 5.5 horse Honda log splitter. I just ran it for a few minutes, ran an air compressor off it and no indication of the motor feeling any resistance, while my 10 horse Generac would have let me know. I'm very impressed. So much quieter than a Generac, huge muffler.

Update. I must have got an oddball. Posts below, buyers received the 13 horse as advertised.

Champion Portable Generator - 41537, December 27, 2011 By Born Rich

I bought this generator after a passing hurricane and two tropical storms visited the Northeast (New Jersey) in 2011. Our basement flooded when the power went out rendering our sump pumps inoperable. An estimate for battery backup sump pumps was in the $800 range EACH. That made a generator very attractive, and I too began reading the reviews of generators and features that would be helpful if and when I purchased one (electric start, can be used in all 50 states (CARB compliant), solid wheels, high capacity, and long(er) warranty than most). The previous reviewers are absolutely correct about this generator being an incredible value for the capability you will buy vs the dollar spent. I had an electrician wire a 30a receptacle outside of the house to the circuit breaker box inside the garage with a breaker bar lock out for safety. I also bought a 1.5a battery maintainer ("floater") to keep the battery charged and ready for use (you can pull-start the unit if you desire to do so). I have tested this unit with my household load (two refrigerators, two sump pumps, lights, central heating fan, microwave, fans, etc.) and was very satisfied with the unit easily handling the electrical load. This generator started easily out of the box, came with accessories that other units don't, and has a large enough capacity to handle everything I would want to power in an emergency...with a substantial surge reserve if necessary. A great value and quite powerful. The next level of wattage capacity is far more expensive. Highly recommended, and these reviews indicate substantial ease of use and powerful performance with the Model 41537 Champion generator. Along with the 1.5a battery maintainer, I would also seriously recommend using a fuel stabilizer (StaBil)in your gas can and in the fuel tank of the generator). A value-added feature is lifetime technical support and delivery of the unit was quick (less than three days!) and careful. The delivery team placed it in my garage strapped to a wooden pallet

Nice unit with packed features., November 9, 2011 By BIRDPEN (MA USA)

I totally agree with other detailed review on every point. I have bought this unit from Costco, much cheaper than sold elsewhere, including via Amazon. Unit was easy to unpack, attached wheels and ready for run in 15-20 minutes. I like the solid wheels, no worry about air pressure or flat tire. This generator is little loud, as you would expect for this category, but no louder than a high end snow blower, and not much noticeable when you are inside the house. It came with battery and electric start, works flawlessly. Also included 25', L15-30R connector cable (worth $70-$100), engine oil and tools.
My first impression is very good, tested with voltmeter, it is generating 122Volts, on board display showing 61Hz. Tried bunch of electric loads for testing and worked great. Not tested with full load yet, but I guess for that I need to wait for next power outage :)

Champion Power Equipment Generator - Model 41537, November 9, 2011 By R. Stoer (Northern NJ United States)
(REAL NAME)

At the time of this writing there are no user reviews listed anywhere for this model. Therefore, I'm posting my initial impressions in the hope it will be of some use to those seeking information regarding this generator. Later I'll update the review as to how it performs in the long-term.

The first several paragraphs discuss some things I've learned while shopping for generators in this price/power range. The paragraph headings describe the topic. If you're not interested, you can skip right to "My review of the 41537".

Made in China vs. Made in USA:
I did a lot of research on generators and transfer switches after hurricane Irene left us without power for five days. The first thing I discovered was that it's difficult (if not impossible) to find a generator this powerful, made in the USA, for less than $1,200.00. Briggs & Stratton and Generac make some models in the U.S., but their homeowner lines are made in China. I also learned that when a model boasts of an engine by one of several well-known Japanese manufacturers, that engine is often made by the Japanese company in China. Whatever your personal preferences, good and bad products come from all countries, and the reviews of the Chinese made units seemed no worse than their more expensive USA equivalents.
Bottom line: American made generators exist. But if you want one, be prepared to spend at least 50% more. Since I will only be using mine occasionally, I couldn't justify the premium.

Differences (and similarities) between Chinese made generators:
There are dozens of brands of portable generators being sold in the U.S. A large part of the Chinese built units have brand names you've never heard of and they look nearly identical. The companies behind these brands are apparently importers, with no manufacturing capability of their own. They all seem to buy from the same factory and just slap their name on it. However, there are a few companies with their own manufacturing facilities in China. That sets them apart, as it gives them more control over the design and quality of the finished product. Although that product could be worse than the 'standard model' the assumption is they went their own way to be better than the pack, not worse. The differences in reviews of these generic models seems to come down to the level of customer service and warranty support offered by the company.

What drew me to the Champion Brand:
1)Generally good reviews. As I mentioned, I couldn't find any reviews for this particular model, but the smaller units from Champion get mostly favorable comments.
2)Value. They were hard to beat on price vs. (performance, features, warranty, & reviews).
3)Decent warranty: One year labor/Two years parts. Not the best available, but better than many.
4)They were one of a handful of brands claiming to have their own manufacturing facilities.
5)They've been around since 2003 - not a lifetime but longer than many competitors.
6)They claim to pride themselves on their customer service. Since lack of support is probably the largest complaint against other brands, I looked into that claim.
Here's what I found:

Like Sears, there's an exploded view and a complete parts list in the owner's manual. They also claim to keep a good supply of parts on-hand (I did not confirm this).

Before I made my purchase I emailed the company's sales department twice. Both times they got back to me in 3 or 4 days with satisfactory answers to my questions. Not really speedy but they did respond, and my questions were not service related. The technical department may be better (or worse). Hopefully, I'll never have to find out.

In the support section of their website, they have several technical bulletins offering help with various issues people may experience with their products. These range from broken starter cords and choke levers to engine adjustments and dealing with stale gas. Some may see this approach as an attempt to shift the burden of fixing their broken equipment to the customer, but I like it. These generators weigh over 200 pounds so it's not easy to schlep them to a service center, even when under warranty. Plus there's the time involved and loss of service while it's in the shop. If one of these tips can get you up-and-running again quickly (especially in an emergency) why not? - better too much information than to little.

My review of the 41537:
The model 41537 has an output rated at 7500W continuous with peaks up to 9375W. It's powered by a 15HP, 439cc OHV engine with electric or recoil start and splash lubrication. It has a 5.9 gallon metal gas tank (coated inside to prevent rust) with a built-in fuel gauge. The fuel cap is chained to the tank to prevent loss and there's a removable strainer in the fuel inlet. It has a drop-down `U' shaped handle at one end and rolls on a pair of 10" non-pneumatic tires. There's a low-oil shutoff and an over-voltage shut-off (Volt Guard). It has two duplex 120VAC outlets and one 240VAC 30A L14-30R receptacle. All outlets are protected by circuit breakers.

The unit arrived undamaged. It took about fifteen minutes to un-box it, assemble it, and add the supplied oil & gas. It took almost the entire container of oil, but not quite. There may be some oil in the reservoir upon shipping so don't just dump the whole bottle in without checking.

The assembled unit looked sturdy and it started up immediately (after I remembered to turn on the gas). The on-board voltmeter read 127 VAC (254/2) with no load and the frequency showed 63 Hz. My own voltmeter measured 122 VAC at the same time so the on-board meter may be about 5 volts high (I'll check it with a third meter soon and add my findings).

I gave it a quick load test by running a Skill Saw (900W running) and a rather large, single piston air compressor (1800W at 120VAC running). The air compressor caused the engine RPM's to drop noticeably upon startup but it recovered quickly and ran fine.

My first real use of the generator was to power an electric "JawSaw" tree pruner after a freak October snowstorm broke branches in several trees on my property. The generator was so heavy I realized I wouldn't be able to wheel it all over the property so I loaded it into a dump cart hitched to the back of my lawn tractor an drove it from tree to tree - I didn't even take it off the cart. It started right away every time and had no trouble with the small five-amp load. I admit that's not much of a test, but so-far so-good.

Pro's:
Comes complete with battery (Surprisingly, not all electric start generators include it), oil, funnel, spark plug wrench, glossy paper manual (though lacking some detail). It also comes with a 25', 10 gauge, 4 wire cord with an L14-30 plug and five 110 VAC receptacles. To buy this cable separately would cost $75-$100. I cut off the 110 VAC outlets and installed an L14-30 in-line receptacle ($16.99 from Amazon) to create a cord to run between the generator and the inlet box for my transfer switch. No other generator I've seen comes with a 25' cord like this.

Easy to Assemble. Bolt on the wheels, feet, and connect the battery. Add oil and gas. Done. Speaking of wheels, here's a small thing that I liked about this unit. Most other brands hold the wheels on the axle with cotter pins. I'm sure that works fine, but the nut, bolt, and sleeve used by this model just seems more substantial.

IntelliGauge: This digital display can be switched to show voltage, frequency (Hz) and hours-of-operation. Very useful, but initial tests show that at least the voltage part may not be terribly accurate.

Gas Gauge: Not an extraordinary thing. Most have it, but not all.

Volt-Guard over-voltage protection. This is a very useful feature that will shut down the engine in the event the Automatic Voltage Regular (AVR) fails, thereby protecting your equipment from receiving too high a voltage. It's not mentioned in the manual or the on-line specs but it says on the box that it has it. There's a video explaining it on Champion's website and U-Tube.

It has a brush type generator with copper windings. This type generator is more costly and heavier, but more efficient.

Con's:
Nothing much so far, but if I want to pick nits:

It's loud (as I knew it would be). It's has a 15HP engine running at 3,600RPM - It's going to be loud. Inverter type generators are generally much quieter but they're limited in output and cost more. Standby generators are quieter because they're in a box. They make enclosures for portable units but they're expensive and I don't know how well they work. Honda offers some relatively quiet (non-inverter) units, but none are as powerful as this and they're very pricey.

It's heavy and awkward to move. All generators this powerful are heavy but Ridgid has designed theirs similar to a hand truck, with a taller (folding) handle and the weight balanced over the wheels. If you'll be moving yours any distance you may want to consider one of those.

The manual could be more thorough (although much of what's missing is available on-line).

So far, I'm very happy with my purchase. My complaints are insignificant. If it continues to perform well I'll be a happy customer.

Update 12/9/11:
A note on pricing: When I said this generator was a good buy, I meant at the price Amazon was selling them for at the time, which ranged from $812 to $849 delivered. At that price or below I contend this model is hard to beat. There are also other Champion models that are similar to the 41537 but offer remote start/stop for about $75-100 more. Those models are: 41552 & 41535 (Cat 5 line). Anything said about the 41537 should also pertain to them.

instructions could be a better and oil fill could be a little easier to do but really it's compact and does what it has to do. starts easily and runs great right out of the box.

Very happy with this purchase. Generator started on the third pull very first time I attempted to use it. Choke lever position is mislabeled (reversed) on both the unit and in the manual. I noticed the choke butterfly was in the wrong position when I pulled the cover to the air filter to check it before running. Tried to contact the seller about this issue, but got an obvious form response "If you are having problems with your new .......,etc." Not thrilled about their ignorance and potential future responses in case of trouble. I thought they may want to include an errata sheet or something, but they were not paying much attention.
Otherwise, I ran it for two hours while monitoring the output with a 600 W worklight and a P4400 Kill A Watt. Ran fine, steady, and relatively quiet at 63Hz freq. Didn't seem to put a dent into the gas supply in the tank. Did not get a chance to use it for a real emergency yet - I got it for the recent hurricane on the East coast, but never lost city power. Be aware that it's rated at only 1000 W continuous duty, though. I got it mainly for the sump pump which is about all it could handle, anyway. Made in China. Big surprise there!!

The 1000/1500 watt rating is accurate. Some other companies are selling this same generator with different cosmetic features and higher load ratings (such as 1200/1600 or even 1400/2000). I've seen a few of them and the motor and genset are identical. Under ideal conditions (below freezing temperatures - very low humidity) mine will just barely pull a 1500 watt heater. On a warmer day with higher humidity the same 1500 watt heater will bog the motor down immediately and eventually trip off if you don't reduce the load. I believe to get the best life from this unit, you should not exceed a 1000 watt continuous load.
The AVR works well, the voltage output stayed within one volt of 115VAC regardless of load. The governor works as expected, it will overshoot slightly up and down once when a large load change occurs. Pretty much typical of all fan type governors. All of these Chinese generators (from dozens of different companies) are clones of Honda models sold several years ago. I won't claim this generator (or any of the other clones) are as good as a Honda, but they are much closer than most Honda owners would probably admit. Noise levels are pretty darn close to Honda as well. If anything, they seem to have more mechanical noise, but the exhaust noise is well muffled.
Fuel consumption is also very Honda-like. That is to say - very good. Overall, I'd say you are getting about 80% of the quality of a Honda, and 100% of the engineering design features. The prices for these things vs. a real Honda can be 1/5 as much or lower (80% LESS)- depending on where you buy it. I got my MX-1500 for $159 and free shipping. Some other places are selling the same basic generator with different ratings and brand name stamped on then for almost double that price.
The biggest drawback for these Chinese generators is finding parts and repair service. Many dealers will provide replacement parts when the units are still under warranty, but beyond the warranty period it can be difficult to impossible. Considering the ultra low price that these things go for, many will find that to be an acceptable trade-off. I'd rate it 5 stars plus for value, and 3 stars for quality. My overall rating is 4 stars.

Great deal!!, February 4, 2012 By Rod

Finally bought a generator for the frequent winter power outages I experience up here in the Sierra Foothills Ca. After spending lots of time online gathering all the information and reviews on the generators in my price range ($500-$800) I decided on the Champion 41135 6,800 watt generator. After 8 days (within the quoted time frame) the generator arrived in undamaged condition. Installing the "wheel/handle kit" was very easy to do and was ready to go in less then 30 min. After adding gas and oil ( didn't get the oil promised in the product information),it started up after the 2nd pull and ran very smooth for about an hour. Winter has been late this year so haven't had a chance to use it under real world conditions yet but will up date my review when I do. Over all I would strongly recommend this generator for any uses you my need due to the great cost, power output and apparent great construction of this product.

New Gen., January 23, 2012 By Ralph Gould Jr (Hadley, MA, US)

Quick delivery, and so easy to put together. I filled it up and it started on the second pull and ran great. Did a test on all and it handled everything I plugged in with no problems. The handle makes moving it simple and easy

Champion 5500 Watt Generator, January 16, 2012 By BigGeck

I kicked around buying a generator as a back-up to my house for years and finally decided to do it after all the crazy weather that has been happening lately. Buying this through Amazon was a very logical option. I feel that I recieved it for a great price and shipping was extremely quick and easy. The generator itself was very easy to put together, the directions could not have been more clear, it started on the first pull and performed exactly as I had hoped it would. I am an electrician so I have it set up that I can plug it directly into the electrical system of my house and power everything that I need within maybe a five minute time frame. I will have to monitor what all is used at the same time but my wife can now make her tea, flush the toilets and even take a hot shower under any kind of weather conditions. HOW NICE IS THAT GOING TO BE NOW?!?!?!?! Most of you I think will understand the last statement. Thanks for making it so easy to knock one more issue off of my to-do list.

good deal, 5 star rating, December 4, 2011 By Joe

it runs very good, easy to start, and fairly quiet for it's size, good on gas, easy to move around
