McCulloch FG5700AK 5,700 Watt 11 HP 338cc Portable Gas Powered Generator Description

The McCulloch 5,700-watt 11 HP portable power generator with wheel kit has a 5-gallon fuel tank for longer running time during blackouts. It's powered by an efficient 11 HP OHV engine with an easy pull recoil starter. This generator shuts off the ignition when dangerously low oil levels occur, and it's enclosed in a compact protective roll cage frame. You'll also appreciate the large muffler that helps restrict noise from the generator, which is backed by a 1-year limited warranty.

This is a modern portable generator great for camping, fishing and out in the shop area, constructed with a permenant magnet alternator and an OHC gasoline combustion engine. The engine turns the rotor outside the stator to change the magnetic flux generated into AC electricity through an inverter to DC then transfer to AC output

McCulloch generator 5700w, November 2, 2011 By AcePayday (USA)

I purchased this generator new for $630 from WalMart of all places and used it during a recent power outage that lasted 5 days. Once I installed the wheel kit and added oil (it comes without oil in it), I pulled on the starter rope twice and it fired right up. I ran it for five days straight, 24 hours a day, and it never once hiccuped. My unit has four 120VAC outlets for extension cords and one 240VAC 30amp outlet which is used to connect (via 10 gauge/4 wire cable with twist-lock connectors) to the plug mounted on the side of my house leading to the transfer switch wired to my main e-panel. This unit is a beast and much quieter than most generators. . It handled my deep well pump, refrigerator, oil furnace, TV, computer, microwave, toaster, can opener, e-skillet and lights in four rooms (about 3800W) at the same time without any difficulty and could have easily handled more. This unit saved our butts and made life almost normal during the power outage. I cannot speak highly enough about this unit and would recommend it without any hesitation to someone looking for emergency power backup!

Good little unit, February 26, 2010 By Derek Curlee (Yoakum, tx)
(REAL NAME)

I have had this unit for about 5 years. I have never had any mechanical problems or electrical issues with the generator. It does have one issue I am not pleased with. The recoil start cover is plastic. The eyelit that the coil rope runs through came loose on the rope guide and allowed the rope to cut through the cover. When this happened the rope jumped the spindle inside and I had to remove the cover and re-do the rope on the spring loaded spindle. Easy enough, but a majot pain non the less. If that cover piece would have been metal, I would have no problems with this unit.

McCulloch 11HP 5KW Generator FG5700AK, January 20, 2008 By Steve Hendrix (Ohio, USA)

Very nice little unit, though used very little thus far. Now that I have a generator, we'll probably never have another power outage <grin>. This unit has plenty of power for emergency household use. It definitely sees a LOAD when my big deep-well water pump kicks on, but handles it just fine.

The only con I've seen thus far is that it floods easily. Choke it for one pull only (maybe two if it's REALLY cold). Otherwise it starts easily on the first or second pull.

Note that the picture Amazon is showing depicts a slightly more expensive model, with the side-mounted control panel. The one I received is the basic model, with the plugs right in the end of the generator, and no AC power switches. Just fine for my purposes, and the price was better than I've seen anywhere else.

Porter-Cable 5,500-Watt Portable Generator BSV550-W

Porter-Cable 5,500-Watt Portable Generator BSV550-W Customer Reviews

Porter Cable 5500 watt generator, September 30, 2008 By Robert Pesnell "Blewzmann" (Texas)
(REAL NAME)

This generator proved to be a life saver this year when IKE came barreling down and slammed into the Texas coast. We were without power for a little over 11 days and I ran the generator 24/7 except for twice when I changed the oil in it. To say it was quiet would be a lie however for the comfort that it provided it was well worth the noise factor. I had plugged in all at one time were the following. One 110 ac/window unit, a chest freezer, the refrigerator, the televison x2 the satellite box. Four fans, and three or four lights I ran it hard and long a couple of times you could tell I was right on the edge of the wattage however she pulled though with flying colors. So basically it ran loaded up over 240 hours and I would trust it to do it again. Best money spent in a long time. Great to see a good product again that did not make me go broke buying it.

Porter-Cable generator, January 27, 2008 By Richard Hackbarth "rhackbar" (sw mi)

I purchased this generator to be able to withstand outages at home, take in my truck (RVing), and use with my electric chain saw for making wood. It came in handy for storm caused outage already last summer.

Of course it is noisy and heavy, but the output is worth it. No trouble keeping the sump pump, freezers, and refrigerators working for a day and a half.

The sale price with free shipping was the deciding factor in purchasing the machine as I had looked for several months before purchasing.

One tire went flat in the fall - stem was bad and had to purchase a new innertube from the local farm store. Easy to replace.

I see so many brands on the market now - some with less expensive amounts for the same power - but am satisfied I got what I paid for.

The red color is nice too.

I purchsed the cover for the generator about three weeks later after seeing how much dust it would collect in the shed or garage.

Recently used generator for jobsite and very pleased with it's performance. Straight out of the box, this unit has proven itself. Ability to run pancake compressor, radio/chargers, table saw, and many other tools w/o any problems. Nice Unit that is not too heavy, while at the same time pretty transportable.

Nice Generator, February 2, 2007 By Sooner Dad (Edmond, OK)

We bought this generator 3 weeks ago in the middle of a bad ice storm because of forcast of major extended power outages in our area. Upon arrival we unpacked it and did a test-run. It started instantly on the first pull and ran great, but would not produce any voltage at all. We loaded it up and took it into town to the Porter-Cable service center (30 mile drive) and left it with them for repair. A few days later it was repaired and ready to go. The technician said it had become "demagnetized" from being in storage a long time. We took it home and tested it again. We connected the heating system, several lights, the water well, the fridge, a TV, and a portable electric heater for a total of about 4,000 watts and ran it for 4 hours with no problems. I think it will probably be a good unit and should perform for years to come. It runs relatively quiet too, and starts very fast and easy!

This review is from: Porter-Cable 5,500-Watt Portable Generator BSV550-W (Lawn & Patio)
I bought the Porter-Cable 5,550-Watt Portable Generator last year and I am pleased with this purchase. I had an electrician create a system so I could plug the generator directly into my circuit panel when the power went out. I have used it 3 times and my wife once. She does not like to do these types of things but I was away. The generator started all 4 times with 1 or 2 pulls. It easily powers the well pump, oil burner, refrigerator, computer, TV and a number of lights.

Starts first or second pull, pulls easy, runs everything!!! I paid less for this than some sites sell the 12 horse Vanguard engine for (and got free shipping!)

Powerful generator, October 5, 2004 By Hurricane survivor (central Florida)

I was recently a victim of hurricane Jeanne in Florida. The generator ran everything in my house including a window unit air conditioner. It would run for about 8 hours before it needed refueling and it was not that loud. I used the generator for 4 days solid and it never missed a beat. I would recomend this generator to anyone.

(REAL NAME)

We ran this generator for 3 1/2 days after losing power after a freak fall snowstorm. What could have been an unbearable 4 days turned out to be quite comfortable. It was easy to start, usually on the first pull after it had been running a while and with only two pulls on a cold start. It is very efficient, lasting for close to 14 hours on a 7-gallon fill-up. (It never actually ran out on us...we were always able to refill it in time.) It enabled me to power our furnace, hot water heater, fridge, computers, certain small appliances, and several lights. In an era where one-foot snowstorms with wind and ice are becoming the norm in my area, I feel blessed to have this machine! (My son has named it "Jennie.")

I live in a semi-remote part of the country and I had my Generator within 7 days of ordering as against reviews I had read where buyers waited weeks. The assembly was easy and straghtforward and the generator started on the second pull. It is used as backup power when our power fails (frequently). It easily holds our gas furnace, refrigerator, chest freezer, lighting, TV and computer. It holds enough gas to carry us through most power outages. I am well satisfied with this purchase.

I have used this generator for a few small jobs so far. Worked great. Very easy to start. Large fuel tank. Plenty of amp capacity for startup amperage. Manual could be a little clearer on wiring the plug (inc) for 220v. Shipping sucked, took forever. ABF lost it, then found it, so I said, leave it where it is, I'll come and get it. Product 5 stars so far, minus 1 star for shipping.

Works as Advertised
, September 7, 2004 By H Winter "HankW" (Charleston SC)

We received the generator today. My son and I put it together in about 2 hours. The instructions were clear on how to put the wheel kit on the frame.

Gassed and oiled it up and it fired on the first pull.

Shipping from ABF was great. Received a call about 2 days before delivery to arrange the drop off.

Note: We could have bought a generator from one of the home stores for about $50 less but felt that the Porter-Cable was probably a better value based on the reviews placed here.

Porter-Cable BSI550-W 5,500 Watt is a work-horse., January 2, 2004 By Ricky McKenzie (Tylertown, MS United States)
(REAL NAME)

I purchased the Porter-Cable BSI550-W 5,500 Watt Generator with 10 HP Engine because I had to have portable power for residential construction. I bought it so I could run 13 - 15 amp circular saws and a 15 amp, 5 h.p. electric air compressor. It would not kick the compressor on when the air was at 100 lbs. so a serviceman set the rpm at 3700 rpm instead of the factory set 3600 rpm, which generates at 140 volts, no load. It runs great and runs super good. The negative side is having to idle it above the recommeded rpm and the extremely loud noise it makes even with the quiet muffler that it came with. There is also a loud rattling sound in the lower part of the 10 hp B and S engine. I don't know if that's a defect that can be fixed or something that you have to live with. It seems to come from the engine connecting rod to the piston. Other than that it is a great generator for the price. A person who uses it occasionally might not even be bothered by the rattling noise.

Bang for the buck!, November 20, 2003 By "ohioindy" (Canal Fulton, OH USA)

This is certainly a step UP from the usual 4,500 watt "budget" generators! Very easy to assemble and a wonderful heavy duty unit that will power MOST of my house in case of electrical problems. Be aware.. you will still need to probably purchase a transfer switch (around $400) and cable (another $50) plus a couple hundred more for installation if you want to do it the "RIGHT" way, however, I figured that in the event of a power outage, it is MORE than worth the cost. I purchased this item when there was free delivery, which was great, because the shipping company said that it would probably have been an additional $200 for shipping this item! I also got a $50 rebate and the price was quite a bit lower than it is now, but I still don't think you can go wrong with this unit. The large fuel tank is certainly a plus! Of course, the delivery company met me and delivered it to the "street" (I had to drag it UP my driveway), but it was well worth it for the price (free!). Porter Cable has a great reputation for this equipment, and I'm looking foward to giving it a full test as soon as my power drops out this winter.

Most Excellent
, November 17, 2003 By Anthony (Adamstown, Md United States)

I am very pleased with this generator. I'm not exactly Tony the toolman, but this was a breeze to start up and to attach the wheel kit. Just added gas and oil started on the first pull. I'm just waiting or the electrician to show up and install the transfer switch and I'll be ready for most anything. I was told that since my furnace is gas and don't have a well pump that I'll be able to hook up most of my house. The shipping with ABF was a little tedious, I had to leave work and arrange a meeting place, but the driver was cool and helpfull. Let it snow, Let it snow, Let it snow.

Great Generator Worth Twice The Price
, December 5, 2011 By GoneOffRoadin

I purchased this unit as backup to use for power outages and also to take out to the desert. I decided to go for the pull start because of all the reviews about how easy it is. The generator started on the 1st pull, and it seems well built and has a solid construction.

It seemed to easily power our overhead 13,500 BTU AC Unit and our 30ft Stealth Toy Hauler. Worked great and it never seemed to bog down. The noise was actually quite minimal. We ran this unit throughout the day in the desert and it didn't bother anyone in the Trailer or surrounding us. The wheel kit makes it easy to move around in sand.

Best Generator purchase I have made, well worth the price, I have recommended this unit to friends and family.

3 days non stop - no complaints, September 6, 2011 By Matt

This generator ran for three straight days save re-feuling and an oil change. It saved a freezer full of food after irene and for that we were delighted. It ran for between 8 and 9 hours keeping a chest freezer working and a handful of CFL lights on. It idled low when not under load and spooled up quickly as required. It was generally pretty miserly with fuel.

It put out a steady 119Volts under all load variations. It put out 60Hz but we noted regular periodic dips to 59.7Hz which appeared to be linked to the engine running rough (not a back fire, but a smooth idle interrupted by an irregular rhythm). No way to diagnose beyond the observed operation.

It strikes me as a copy of a better design. I would guess the honda eu2000i is/was exactly that (which we also own). The hyundai comes with features (an additional outlet and more power 2000 rated vs 1600) and a competitive price that make it seem a far better buy than the honda. But while it replicates the honda shape though larger and heavier, it completely lacks the refinement that defines honda products. Annecdotal observations of the hyundai relative to honda:
1. The Hyundai is noisier
2. The Hyundai Access panels are poorly executed for spark plug - not sure it can be removed with blue cover installed
3. The Hyundai Oil drain/fill is harder to access but comes with plastic tube which helps
4. Hyundai is Heavier / bulkier
5. the hyundai has what i believe is an unforgiveable design flaw:
- if you overfill the gas tank or splill any while filling, it will run down the face of the outlet panel!! The gas cap is recessed into the top of business end of the generator and the plastic panels funnel the spills down the face and possibly behind some panel pieces ( of the blue case) to who knows where. (we're not sloppy with gas but accidents happen - especially with all of the plastic "no spill" junk gas cans - see Eagle type II safety cans Eagle U2-51-S Type II Gas Safety Can 5-Gallon Metal Red With Flex Spout. Like honda, they look expensive but are American made ultra high quality. And the safest gas can I've ever used). Needless to say,the Honda has no such flaw.

6 The hyundai manual is not as clear as Honda but good enough.

7 The Honda has a commercial grade motor and a 3 year commercial use warranty. Try finding that on any gas powered gear. Extremely impressive.

8. The honda ran smooth and steady with stable voltage and frequency.

At the end of the day, you get what you pay for. And I strongly suspect that the honda will be running long after the hyundai is worn out. It should also be pointed out that there are LOTS of places across the country that maintain Honda equipment. No idea where to take or worse yet SEND the hyundai. If you have the money and will use the generator frequently or want to know when you need one it will work, Honda has no match.

Our Honda is staying, the hyundai we may sell.

Keeping me online during Irene., August 27, 2011 By Kevin Tierney

Ordered this and went with two day shipping and got it Thursday before Irene hit us. Started on second pull. The only time I had trouble starting it was when I left it in the off position on the front panel. Has been running a 42inch Plasma TV, HD DVR/Satellite box, Laptop, Network, vonage phone, dsl modem and refrigerator and used about 1- 1.5 gal of gas in 5 hours. Not for heavy loads, couldn't get it to like my 1100 watt micro, but I'm sure it was trying to draw more. If not for this, I would be clueless and without news, weather etc. This isn't the generator to power your house, but it can keep you connected to the world and your food from spoiling. It has been on my deck in a semi protected area running for 6+ hours during the storm. Very very happy with my purchase.

Hyundai HY2000si, May 2, 2011 By raazrbks

I ordered this generator/inverter from Amazon.com & it arrived 2 days later with free shipping! The unit was packaged well. The first thing I noticed was it's physical dimensions were larger than the Honda I previously owned. This is a backup generator & will be used for remote power around my property.

The unit started on the 4th pull. It ran for 5 minutes & died. The next day it did the same thing. Rather than call customer service, I decided to try & fix the problem. It was an easy repair, the inline fuel filter was cracked & leaking allowing the carb to suck air. $2.47 at the parts store & good as new.

As far as performance, it is just slightly louder than the Honda, starts easily & performs as stated. I would have given it 5 stars but the fuel filter issue keeps me from doing that. If you have the cash, spend the extra $500 on the Honda & you will not go wrong because they make a great product, if not, the Hyundai is a good exception. I have no regrets on this purchase.

UPDATE: The initial issue was the ignition coil
Authorized service unable to fix unit. They are sending me a replacement
Hyundai warranty tech very easy to deal with.

Awesome Generator, November 7, 2011 By Cliff

We recently purchased the XG7000E Generac generator after Hurricane Irene. It was very easy to assible, just had to attach the wheels and add oil (which was included). I tested it a few times under load with no problems. Just recently we lost power of 7 days due to a snow storm. We logged 90.2 hours on the generator...ran it up to 10 hours without shutting it down. This machine worked perfectly, powered everything in the house (I even did a load of laundry...but did not use the dryer). Best investment we've ever made!
I would highly recommend this unit!

I had my concerns on previous comments. I wish they had of told me that everything was already hooked up because I went through the start of the book and had to unhook and find everything just to see it was already there. Just add gas,oil and connect the battery (and it has a tag hanging off of it to connect). Seems like a very solid machine with alot of options. So far I am very impressed!!!

generator review, November 30, 2011 By b.haase

My generator was delivered as promised. It was delivered by a lift gate truck and hand carted to my garage. Assembly of the wheel kit was simple.Easy directions to the first start. It started on the first pull!I wired up the transfer switch and pluged in the generator. Every thing worked as promised.NO emergency yet but were ready!

Received Over Thanksgiving..., November 30, 2011 By Terry N. Thompson (Yardley, PA USA)
(REAL NAME)

I just received my Briggs & Stratton Generator the day before Thanksgiving. This is one beautiful machine and solidily built - 185 lbs meant I had to open in my garage by cutting the box. Assembly was very easy - 20 minutes. After purchasing gasoline and filling with oil... my B&S started on the first pull! As many have said, all generators are a bit noisy... but NOW I have power when the lights go out, which in Bucks County PA, happens all the time. I'm ready for the next power outage...

Generator Received - Pleasantly Not as Advertised, November 17, 2011 By Mark

The model 30468 Briggs Generator, as advertised on Amazon, shows that it comes with the 1450 series engine. This disagrees with the specs as shown on the Briggs & Stratton website, for this model. The Briggs website shows it with the 1650 series engine (2 more ft-lbs of torque, 342 cc displacement). I was pleasantly surprised when mine arrived, to find that it did come with the slightly larger 1650 series engine. This was cause for confusion when first shopping on-line. I am assuming that Amazon has this misrepresented, and all others ordering this model will receive it with the larger engine.

Generator arrived in perfect condition and was easy to assemble. In general, the product looks well built, durable, and will hopefully stand the test of time. I have yet to fire it up, waiting to purchase 5W-30 synthetic oil which I plan to use in lieu of the 10W-30 Briggs oil that it came with.

Hopefully Amazon will correct this (potential) error associated with the engine designation, and clear up the confusion.

Filled with oil and gas a couple days later and started on the first pull. Ran smoothly for 15 minutes or so with no load. Well, I did plug a small air compressor into one of the 110V sockets to check it out. Worked fine. Once my transfer switch is installed, plan to test it out under full load (6 - 110V house circuits, including furnace and fridge. No 220V). For now, totally satisfied with this product, and would recommend as a good buy.

Well-made and runs great. Plenty of power!, November 8, 2011 By nice guy (Connecticut)

This generator arrived by truck freight. An ABF truck with a power lift gate delivered it and the driver used a hand-truck to put it in my garage. The generator was well packed and the box was intact.

Assembly time was under 15 minutes. All I had to do was use a couple of wrenches to attach the wheels, pop the wheel covers on, and attach a support bracket to the bottom of the machine.

I dumped the included bottle of oil into the oil fill port, put in a little gas, and it fired up on the first pull.

The generator is not "quiet", but it's quieter than the average lawn mower. It runs smoothly and my volt meter tells me that it's working just as it should.

Nice features include: hour meter, gas gauge, 30amp twist lock power connector

I use this generator to power my: well pump, 2 lighting circuits, fridge + a couple of kitchen outlets, and my oil-fired boiler (hot water and heat). I'm sure that I could power additional circuits, as well - as long as I don't turn on everything at once.

I'm really very happy with the generator but I gave it four stars because it could be quieter and Briggs doesn't publish the specs for total harmonic distortion (THD). I can tell you that everything I plugged in worked without a problem, but my multi-meter doesn't read 60Hz as I would like. It will occassionally read 62.5 Hz and then it starts jumping up to 400Hz+. I attribute this to a pretty distorted sine wave output. I don't have a scope to confirm that, but that's pretty common for generators of this class. I'm not terribly concerned, but I would not use this to power sensitive electronics if I had an alternative. For general household stuff, it's great.

Very nice so far, October 10, 2011 By D. Stines
(REAL NAME)

I had purchased this about a month ago. Was very easy to put together. I have used it one time for a test run. Started up very easily and I used it to power my fridge for about an hour. I'll update when I really get to use it. It does look like a very nice piece of equipment though.

So far so good!
, October 2, 2011 By Lisa (USA)

I have no complaints with this generator thus far...it is brand new and I have not had any reason to use it yet. I have been starting it up once per week (per advice from different websites) and it starts on one pull...I guess I will add to this review once I have had it for awhile. It did arrive with a dent on it despite the box having no visible signs of damage...the damaged part (a black cover for wires) did not affect anything at all so I did not feel as though I had to contact Amazon or the manufacturer.

Works as Advertised, September 13, 2011 By John57

I purchased this generator after not being able to find one in the stores as the most recent hurricane came up the east coast of the US. The generator arrived quickly and started the first time that I pulled the starting handle after filling it with oil and fuel. No problems. It was covered in oil while in the box because the quart of oil that came with the unit leaked during shipment but a rag and a little cleaner cleaned this right up. I am pleased with the generator. I have tested for an extended period of time at nearly full load and it works as advertized. I would recommended this generator to anyone who would like the peace of mind of knowing that they have electrical power available when the lights go out for extended periods of time.

Good so far, December 5, 2011 By DN (Worcester, MA USA)

Easy to set up. Fired up right away, and ran it a bit, but haven't yet used it for-real. Materials quality seems average. One minor dent found in it upon opening the box. Costs less than a Honda, but probably not a long-term investment, either.

good buy, November 5, 2011 By Andrew Hui

bougth this unit right after iren and used it during Oct 2011 east cost power outage for 5 days on and off to keep my basement from being flooded and some basic lighting. It had no problem during my first use. I am giving it a 4 star because I have not used it long enough yet. So far so good.

Excellent generator, November 2, 2011 By TW "Gadget Geek" (Northeast, USA)

Purchased the XP 4400 2 years ago in case of a power outage. It has been an incredible asset during the 2011 Halloween snowstorm here in New England. It keeps the furnace running overnight on 2 gallons of gas and I've yet to use 5 gallons in a 24 hour period even though I am running it about 20 hours a day. Have a qualified electrician install a transfer switch for safe and convenient use.

This is the first generator I bought. I am very skeptical. Delivered on time,
easy assembly, easy start, what a surprise. I'm VERY happy.

Good deal for the price, September 23, 2011 By mk

Was shopping for some time. Had a hard time spending tons of $ for something that just sits there. This was $200 less then anything else I looked at. Motor received was 7 HP, not 6.5. Started right up. Ran the furnace, 2 refrigerators, and pump for the water as well as a few lights w/out much stress. Easy to remove the gas also when stored. Loved the DC charger as well. Great item for the $ for something used sparingly.

Great Value, September 16, 2011 By dobbw

Received the generator in 5 business days. Box was a little banged up but the generator well packaged and in good condition, even when the delivery driver dropped it out of his truck. Followed the instructions, installed the wheel kit and was ready to run in an hour. From other reviews I was prepared with a long spout flexible funnel to fill the oil (you'll need one).

The generator started with the first pull. I put a load on both circuits, electric heaters on high, 1500 watts each side. The generator pulled down a bit but did not quit. After a few minutes I set the load to 800 watts and let the generator run two hours. Changed the oil after the two hour run, it was black. Do Not Skip the breakin phase if you really want it to last. Started up, again on the first pull, and let it run for four hours. Changed the oil, much cleaner the second oil change. Will run again for eight hours with another oil change. Then the breakin will be complete.

This generator is everything advertised. It can pull a load at 30 amps without stalling and is reasonably quiet. I am impressed. For the price I am very pleased. When I receive the transfer switch I have ordered I'll test the 240 circuit on my home a/c... with the 30 amp capacity it should handle the load. Will update...

Great Emergency Generator, August 28, 2011 By Mike

I am somewhat of a prepardness freak and this was my last major purchase prior to getting married. My wife thought having a emergency generator was a waste of money. That changed when we had the Jan 2010 Ice Storm in southern Oklahoma. The ice snapped about every power line in southern OK and we were without power for several days in subzero weather. I had been watching the weather and made sure the generator was ready to go (Oil in, grounding rod emplaced, etc). I had not had time to test run it so was a bit nervous. But when the power went out it started on the first pull and worked without a hitch. We used it for three days with no major issues.

This generator was able to power a space heater, floor light, TV, DVD with no issues. I was initially concerned with the Space heater as it used a lot of watts, but I followed the instructions on adding items and it was no problem. We did switch out with a Forman grill to have hot meals.

The only issue I had with this generator was a slight leak (slow drip) on the gas valve. This was fixed after the storm with a slightly bigger gasket and some of the white tape you wrap around pipe fittings. For a tank of gas we ran non-stop for 12 hours and still had gas left over. I didn't run it while we slept at nights as our bedroom trapped the heat fairly well and we had plenty of blankets. I covered it with a old army blanket and it was quite quiet. I had to make a couple of runs for gas because I had drained my emergency gas tank as we were going be moving in a couple of months. As my wife was pregnant at the time, having light, heat, and hot food was VERY important and this generator came through with flying colors. I am not planning on getting a new one yet as this one has less than 100 hours of use, but I am planning on getting this same brand.

No Problems

The XP4400 generator has performed very well for me although I have only about 8 hours running time on the machine. Very economical!!!

Honeywell 2000-6066 2,000 Watt 126cc 4-Stroke OHV Portable Gas Powered Inverter Generator

Honeywell 2000-6066 2,000 Watt 126cc 4-Stroke OHV Portable Gas Powered Inverter Generator Description

Compact in design, the Honeywell 2000-6066 gas-powered portable inverter generator is designed for life on the road. Its durable, lightweight design with built-in handle offers portable power for camping, tailgating, and recreational use. The 2000-6066 features inverter technology that reduces the size, weight, and noise of the generator and allows for the engine to run at varying speeds, significantly reducing the noise and fuel consumption levels. And its special electronic microprocessor can also provide safe, stable power for sensitive electronic devices such as computers.

The 2000-6066 provides a reliable 2,000-watt power supply wherever you need it and a maximum power output of 2,250 watts, and yet it's 40 percent lighter than a standard generator of equal wattage output. It features Honeywell's exclusive EcoMode feature, which saves fuel and reduces noise after startup by adjusting engine speed to meet demand. If the power needs are low, the engine will run more slowly, resulting in a quieter and more fuel-efficient unit.

The case is fully enclosed for quiet operation--making it campground friendly--and its integrated handle makes it easy to move from car to camp site. It's equipped with a 4-stroke, 126-cc OHV (overhead valve) engine, which features a low-oil shutdown system to prevent engine damage and keep the generator in good shape for long-term use.

This generator's 1-gallon fuel tank will give you up to 4.7 hours of operation at a 50-percent load. Other features include splash lubrication, 12-volt battery charging capability, and electronic overload protection. It's backed by a 2-year residential warranty, and a 6-month warranty when used for commercial purposes.
Inverter Wattage Needs

When choosing a portable generator, it's important to identify the starting watts of all the devices you might power at the same time. Some devices draw additional power as they get up and running. If this additional wattage is not accounted for, system overload can result. To determine your requirements for a portable generator, see this wattage chart sample.
How Inverter Technology Works

Inverter generators utilize a different type of alternator than standard generators to generate AC power. The raw power produced is converted from DC to AC power by a computer-controlled inverter module. The engine speed varies depending on the electrical demand, which significantly reduces noise and fuel consumption compared to a standard portable generator. The end result is a portable generator with reduced weight and size, and power that is ultra-clean and capable of safely powering sensitive electronics.

Awesome! Very reliable!, September 4, 2011 By Marian, San Juan PR

We were recently hit by Hurricane Irene. The generator worked great! I was able to power up my Refrigerator, 50" TV, Dish, charge 2 cellphones and a Fan for at least 5 hrs on one Gallon. Generator is relatively quiet, even more on Eco mode. My neighbor was stunned by the size of the generator and that it didn't make that much of a noise compared to his generator.. At night, I would plug 2 fans, CPAP machine, charge my 2 phones and on echo mode, it lasted for 8 hrs. I'm very please with the work it has done, even more so now that we are in the peak of the Hurrican season.

Great little generator, November 6, 2011 By M. Deschaine
(REAL NAME)

I got this for work in a remote location with no power. We have a little station that needs heat so we purchased this to get us by in the winter. I must say when I first started this I thought it was pretty loud till I adjusted a few things. I was running my heater at to high of a setting(1500 watts) and this thing was kicking in really high. Turned the heater down a notch in wattage and it just hums along. I use a modified doghouse to store this in and it hasn't failed us yet. I would recommend this if you can't afford a Honda which of course is really expensive but much quieter. Time will tell on the durability of this thing.

Great generator, January 24, 2012 By Gus

I just recived this unpacked (assambled very easy)added gas and oil I sware it did not even take a full pull to crank over it runs so quite it seams very well built there are roller barrings on both ends of the crank shaft I love this Generator!!

Good Generator, December 18, 2011 By CHARLIE K. (Long Island, New York - USA)

The generator was delivered on schedule within a few days after placing the order. IT was easy to assemble the legs & Wheels. I agree with other reviews that the oil was a little difficult to put in and a long funnel would be helpful. I just tipped it on its side and filled it that way. After gassing up it started on the 3rd pull and ran smooth. Not too loud, like a lawn mower. I plugged in my small compressor and it ran without problem. I put some fuel stabilizer in the tank and stowed it away in the shed ready to go when we have the next power outage.

Next step would be to wire the 30 amp 220v twist lock circuit in to the house wiring with a manual disconnect/transfer switch to avoid having to run extension cords all over.

I would recommend this unit to others looking for 220v @ 30a in an economical value package that will get the job done when the lights go out without breaking the bank.

Good, So Far., December 8, 2011 By Bob "Bob"

I was a little worried about it coming with damage after all the bad reviews but it arrived in excellent shape. I didn't want to dish out big bucks for a item I might only use once in awhile during an emergency, $400. seemed like a good deal. I put it together in about 40 minutes and then tested it out. It ran fine, but I only ran it for about a hour. Hopefully it will live up to the challenge of a storm when I need it for Hours. I'm happy so far.

It Ran For 9 Days Straight 24/7 .....Awesome, November 22, 2011 By Outofshapedad

I bought this 4 weeks before the big October snow storm in the northeast from Amazon who delivered it within a few days. I was out of power for 9 days and this generator ran 24/7 without any issues powering my furnace, water pump, fridge, T.V. and a few lights. The best thing is that it ran for 10-11 hours on 4 gallons of gas and was quite. I really needed this machine to produce and it never let me down.

Great generator for the money, November 14, 2011 By Engineer_CT

I was hesitant to purchase the generator as it has a Chinese AM Pride engine made by the CHONGQING company whereas I was looking for a better known engine such as Briggs and Stratton, etc. I decided to take a chance on it anyway as I was without power during a October Snowstorm here in CT. After about 40 hours of run time I am pleasantly surprised. The generator starts easily on the second pull and is very quite. The unit runs about 12 hours on 4 gallons of gas...pretty impressive. Weighing in at about 100 lbs, it is easy enough to transport in the trunk of your car. The generator has a great feature set...among these are:

1. Low THD - clean power to power computers and other electronic devices
2. GFCI on the power outlets
3. Has both the 120v L5-30 and the 240v L15-30 twist lock connectors.
4. Wheel kit included
5. 1 year warranty
6. Low Oil light, with Auto shutdown when oil is critically low
7. Voltage Regulation

Time will tell how reliable this AM Pride engine is but so far so good.

Good for the money, November 4, 2011 By Robert J. Mello (Boston, MA United States)

Powered the fridge, freezer and furnace during our recent outage in New England. It did have a tendency to stop running once in a while (started back up easily though). Clearly not a high end unit, but very pleased for the price.

Worked Great Highly Recomended, November 3, 2011 By McFeeFee (New Jersey)

This generator worked great when we needed it most. It was our first Generator so we did not know what to expect but there was no surprises. If you plan to connect it to your Circuit Breaker Panel order the L14-30 Receptacle box they are hard to find during a natural disaster and the matching Extension Cord. For the price you can't beat it.
Pros
1. Wheels and feet were easy to install even came with tools.
2. Small footprint.
3. Started on the second pull, ran smooth out of the box.
4. The L14-30 Receptacle made it easy to wire into main panel.
5. Powered - Direct Vent Boiler/w circulator pumps, Refrigerator/Freezer, 50' Plasma, DVR and several lights.
6. Lasted 9+ hours overnight, it would have gone longer but I topped it off anyway
Con
1. Louder than I would have liked but not too loud
2. Fedex was suppose to deliver before 3pm but they didn't come until 4:30 had to wait all day.

Very pleased, November 3, 2011 By Maja Russell

Got this generator for after an ice storm. had it up and running within minutes.

Pros: Easy start, very, very quiet (I have a neighbor who was running a larger generator who lives 200 yards away, and I could hear his over this one), very fuel efficient, long run time, able to run a variety of items at once, smooth operation, and very little to no revving when items are started up or added. Ran for 13.5 hours on 3/4 tank, so more than able to sleep through the night.

Cons: Was not able to run water heater, water pump and oil furnace at once. the generator book was very hard to read and had many different languages. Not well written at all.

Overall: This will not run your whole house for you, but it will keep you warm and with water and lights.

Generac 5735 GP17500E 26,250 Watt 992cc OHV Portable Gas Powered Generator With Electric Start

Generac 5735 GP17500E 26,250 Watt 992cc OHV Portable Gas Powered Generator With Electric Start Description

Featuring a compact, wheeled frame for easy transport, the Generac 17,500-Watt Portable Gas-Powered Generator with Electric Start provides a reliable power supply wherever you need it. A Generac OHVI (overhead valve industrial) engine delivers performance and power, while a sturdy steel-tube cradle protects the generator's exterior. For safe and comfortable use, the circuit-breaker outlets prevent power overloads, and the low-tone muffler makes for ultra quiet operation.

A Durable Power Supply Wherever You Need It
The Generac 17,500-Watt Generator with Electric Start is an ideal portable generator to have at home, on the job site, or wherever you need power. Its compact frame--48.5 x 31 x 39.5 inches (LxWxH)--is fitted with lifting eye handles and pneumatic, all-terrain wheels for easy portability. And with its hardened steel-tube cradle, this rugged generator holds up well for frequent travel, allowing you to look forward to years of operation. Plus, this model features an electric ignition for fast, easy start-up.

Thanks to its versatile design, this generator adds comfort and possibility to any situation. Use it to keep your family safe through unexpected blackouts or make construction jobs faster and easier.

A Low-Maintenance, High-Performance OHVI Engine
Designed specifically for generators, the Generac 17,500-Watt Generator with Electric Start's heavy-duty 992-cc OHVI (overhead valve industrial) engine boasts a host of features. An exclusive X-Torq governor maximizes the engine's performance to keep it running without stalls. And so engine components continue moving smoothly, a pressurized lubrication system sends oil directly to critical areas.

Thanks to this full-pressure lubrication system, the engine can employ an automotive-grade, spin-on oil filter that sifts out dirt and other unwanted substances. The oil filter works alongside a dual-element air filter. Together, the two keep engine performance at a maximum and maintenance at a minimum.

Plus, this generator's sturdy, 16-gallon resin tank ensures a full 10 hours of operation at a 50-percent load, letting you relax for hours of use. The automatic-idle control reduces fuel usage and noise, while the tank's built-in fuel gauge lets you monitor fuel levels at a glance. Generac even provides you with your first supply of oil.

Plenty of Wattage to Run a Full Range of Appliances
The most heavy-duty of Generac's GP model generators, the Generac 17,500-Watt Generator with Electric Start supplies 17,500 output watts and 26,250 maximum watts (for start-up of devices). It has an A/C voltage of 120/240 and a frequency of 60 hertz.

For unexpected blackouts, this is enough wattage to run home appliances such as security systems, computers, and electric stoves, as well as air conditioning systems and sump pumps. (A manual transfer switch is required to connect to air conditioning systems.) For construction and landscaping applications, it's enough to support large devices such as lawn mowers, belt sanders, and table saws. And for camping and outdoor events, it can run portable stereos, outdoor lights, and electric grills.

(Note: All appliances should be checked for actual wattage ratings.)

Safe, Quiet Operation with Overload-Protected Outlets
If security and quiet operation are important to you in a generator, then the Generac 17,500-Watt Generator with Electric Start is an ideal choice. Its outlets (two 120-volt, two 120-volt GFCI, one 120-volt 30 Amp twist lock, one 120/240-volt 50 Amp, and one 12 VDC battery charger) are circuit-breaker protected, guarding against power overloads and allowing the generator to smoothly send power to your appliances. And the low-tone muffler means the generator runs at a comfortable noise level that easily blends into the background.

This generator is backed by a two-year limited warranty.

Generator requires a straight NEMA 14-50R plug to use the retaining clip Generac provides (outlet is on the bottom on 17500 watt model, gravity pulls out my 90 degree plug and 6-4 wire), common plugs are 90 degrees. No 17500 watt or 70 amp connection available, 50 amp and 30 amp outlets only-they cannot be connected for full output. Per Generac technical support, converting to natural gas or propane voids the warranty. Exhaust shroud and spark arrestor both resonate at full power, quite noisy. Will build an enclosure to dampen noise and since it cannot get wet during use.

Generator runs well and has been adequate for 240V 30A welding.

This review is from: Generac 5735 GP17500E 26,250 Watt 992cc OHV Portable Gas Powered Generator With Electric Start
Once I assembled the generator (took about an hour), it looks impressive. Even thought it weights almost 400lbs, it is well balanced and is easy to move around with the large handle and wheels. After servicing the motor with the provided oil and fresh gasoline, the generator was no problem to start. After running for a few minutes, the motor developed a surging problem which I think can be adjusted out with some technical advice.

Generac 17,500 watt portable generator, August 29, 2010 By  Tractor Boy
The generator was easy to assemble, started right up after filling oil reservoir and fueling. I haven't had a power outage yet since getting this generator (go figure). The only drawback I've seen (so far) is the information provided on the available plug receptacles is rather weak. The 50 amp plug is located underneath the panel face where all the other plug receptacles are located. It has a wire "latch hook" to keep the plug from falling out, but no info on how to properly use it. I had difficuly locating the correct male plug with a "straight" out feature since most are 90 degrees. It would have been nice to have the male plug-end supplied with the generator. I finally found one at Grainger (cost over one hundred bucks, but it's top notch). Although the muffler assembly is impressive looking, it's not quite as quiet as I expected.

Satisfied So Far, January 4, 2012 By John K. Hoffman

I bought the Weekender package on sale via Cabellas for $300 (includes wheel kit, handle, & cover). I had previously owned a larger Coleman Powermate genset (5Kw-6kw), but wanted to replace it for two reasons: 1) it would not run our new high-efficiency gas furnace fan, and 2) I had ignorantly used ethanol gas in it. The ethanol had not created any problems, but I have heard too many horror stories and now run only non-ethanol gas in all my small engines.

I noted a couple things upon opening the undamaged box. Despite lots of strategically placed styrofoam, the air cleaner honeycomb assembly was broken into 7 pieces. I read a couple reports of this before buying, so although I was disappointed, I was not surprised. I also noted it had no motor oil. I assembled everything, but did not attempt to start it. In the meantime, I ordered a Coleman 120-volt twistlock twin lighted receptacle accessory, and twin surge protector adapters from Amazon. I had previously ordered a copper grounding rod and 12-gauge grounding wire from Amazon, as my furnace manufacturer suggested lack of grounding wire may have prevented my old Coleman from running the furnace.

I called Champion the next business day. They agreed to mail me a new air cleaner assembly, which arrived within a week. The metal housing it mounts to was significantly bent, so it took me 20 minutes with a rubber mallet and channel lock before I could mount the replacement part successfully. I filled the oil, added some non-ethanol gas w/Stabil & SeaFoam, set the choke, and gave a couple pulls. It started immediately and sounded good.

I let it run for about an hour with no load, then I started adding and subtracting various loads. I used the cording accessories from Amazon. I started with an oscillating fan, then added a 1,500 watt paint stripping gun. I replaced those with two 1,500 watt space heaters. You could tell the engine was under load, but no problem. I let it run for the 5-hour break-in period, and then changed the oil with Mobile One. I like to use full synthetic oil in my infrequently used engines (snowthrower, genset, and powerwasher). At this point, I tested it with our furnace and it worked great. That was extremely satisfying!!! I didn't bother with the grounding rod, as the Champion techs said it was probably not a factor. I will eventually sink that into my front lawn when the ground thaws this spring.

This was all looking great, so I turned off the gas petcock, ran it dry, and then unscrewed the carburetor bolt and let the little remaining fuel drain out. It is now stored and ready to rock when the need arises. I usually leave a little Stabilized non-ethanol fuel in the tank, mainly because I hate draining them completely. I always keep a fresh can of this around the garage, so when the need arises, I add some fresh fuel into the tank before starting.

The only minor negatives thus far are that tight spaces and cradle make it a little messy to drain oil and carb gas.

great for basic survival during a power outage!, December 12, 2011 By jedb
i bought this generator online via amazon dot com. after our disasterous halloween snowstorm up here in the northeast u.s. too late for that storm but i'm ready next time! 89 octane gas (4 gallons) and briggs and stratton 30 weight oil. fired up on the third pull. the instructions call for .6 litres of oil but mine overflowed even after carefull measuring. add slowly and check as you go. not a real problem. hooked up my microwave, edenpure quartz heater. electric chainsaw, table lamp with a regular 75 watt bulb,tv/dvd player, etc. not at once but the generator did'nt even surge a little with two or more of these appliances going at once. good test run. as i said, good basic survival. better than what i had then. nothing but snapping limbs and a dark cold house. p.s. i recomend the wheel mobility kit and install it before adding gasoline.

Great Value For Emergency Use, November 19, 2011 By Gregory
I live in Northeast Alabama and last spring we were without power for over a week following the tornadoes from April 27th. We had no ice for my wife's medicines and of course lost all of our food in both of our freezers. Last spring was the second year in a row that we experienced power outages and extensive damage due to tornadoes. I looked at alot of different products but for the price this appeared to be the best bargain. We did not need enough power to light up the neighborhood and as such view this as an emergency backup to keep the appliances running and maybe a light or two and a radio. Took it out of the box, put oil and gas in it and pulled the starter rope one time and it started right up. On the first pull. I have never had anything start up on the first pull. I left it outside to run for a while and came in and couldn't even hear it running. Last April I could hear my neighbor's running from 4 houses down. It has an RV outlet on it because it is designed for that but I found an adapter online for about $5 that plugs into that outlet and converts it to a normal household 110 plugin. It even has a fuel shut off valve in-line so you can run it every couple of months and then shut off the fuel supply and let the carb run out the gas so storing it won't leave gum deposits in the carb. I recommend this highly.

Great generator!, November 10, 2011 By sween
I bought this generator this summer. At the end of August we went on a 3 week camping trip out west. We have a pop up camper and many of the campgrounds we stayed at did not have electric hook ups. Our Champion 4,000 Watt generator did a great job keeping us powered up. I just plugged the camper's power cord into it and all of our electrical needs were provided. It always starts on the first or second pull and runs like a charm. I was also pleased with the noise level.

Great Power. Happy to see it lasted 12 hours., November 6, 2011 By Book Maven (New York, NY)
When our power went out, we were able to keep the fridge on, as well as 2 laptops and a light. I'm sure the generator could handle more, but we were being conservative. With those 4 items powered, the generator lasted 12 hours. Our neighbors are now going to get this same one:). We got the wheel ensemble and extension cord too. Two different contractors on 2 different days commented that they had the same generator.(They liked it too).

I am very pleasantly surprised how well this generator performs. I had my doubts buying an inexpensive chinese model. But this generator just kept me and my family warm and cozy during a very cold 4 day power outage. it started amazingly easy, one or two pulls of the cord had it humming. FYI: the plug that fits into this is an L5-30 (3 prongs) not the more common L14-30.
Pros:
Inexpensive.
Free delivery.
Good easy to follow instructions.
Flawless operation (based on 4 days of continuous use at its watt limit).
Gas efficient (one 4 gallon tank runs about 12 hours). this was very helpful since all my surrounding gas stations were shut down due to power loss.
Cons:
No mechanical or design flaws. (I guess that would be a pro)
If i had to choose anything it would be it's limited watt output. but it was actually a blessing since the smaller unit uses less gas.

I highly recommend this generator.

Rating based on assembly and testing, January 9, 2012 By Ken L.

Bought this generator after an autumn in CT that brought a hurricane and snow storm in October that each had power outages. The product arrived in only a few days. Assembly was pretty straight forward. Only issue was one screw that was painted over the threads that made it extremely difficult to screw in and even cracked a tool that came with the generator. That was a fluke and I wouldn't call it a major issue. I assembled the device and started it up per the instructions. The engine turned over on the first pull. I tested it with a number of appliances, and it seems to run as advertised. My expectations are that it will run in the event that we lose power, and I will be able to plug in the basic appliances that we will need, e.g. some lights, electric heater, radio, computers, etc.

After surviving a freak snow storm that led to a 2 day power outage in October, I decided to spring for this generator. It was easy to assemble and started upon first pull. Later on it took more than one pull to get it going and I needed to use 2 hands to do it, but it started just fine. I am impressed that I got such a nice generator at such a low price.

Looks like a solid unit, December 30, 2011 By Rev

I dont have more than a couple hours on this unit but my observations so far:
Easy set up, took about 30 minutes to get out of box and set up. Directions are Ok.
Nice smaller size and noise isnt too bad MUCH less than my larger 5500 watt honeywell. I like the hour counter feature. Starts up on 2nd pull, seems to run fine, Not super heavy in that I can heft it myself if need be but the wheel kit coming included is a great touch. These seem to be selling for $339 shipped which as long as it holds up is a solid price for a midsize generator. I also like the 30 amp socket so I can hook up to transfer switch with 30 amp cord (not included)

like it and did the job, October 20, 2011 By Allan

I was out for 3 days and was able to charge cell phone, laptop and a saltwater fish tank
fyi it is loud but it seems like all of them are.

Generator, September 24, 2011 By JBinVB (VB, VA)

Ordered due to hurricane Irene coming. Delivered on time and promptly. Easy to set up and pretty quiet. Didn't need 4 ourselves this time, but lent to a friend for 3 days who was very happy to borrow and have some power for refrigerator and AC.

Wen 56352 Generator, September 20, 2011 By Lens Hood "outsider" (Wisconsin USA)

So far so good with this piece of equipment. The order was delivered in a timely manner. I have approximately 3 hours (engine hours) of use on this generator. It has been used to run the sump pump during a power outage (the original reason for acquiring it) as well as a couple of power saws and a hedge trimmer. It started right up and was fairly quiet for a gas powered generator. How will it hold up and perform a year or two from now? Well, I'm hopeful that it won't fail, but who knows. Watch for an update if my hopes are dashed.

Works well for the price, September 5, 2011 By coop7111

I ordered this generator 4 days before Irene was scheduled to hit, requested 2nd day delivery, and Amazon came through. It was delivered in 2 days and provided me the time to get everything ready. Assembling the generator (handles, wheels, feet) took about 20 minutes and the tools that come with it make it a snap. I sunk some copper pipe I had laying around into the ground where I planned on placing the generator and connected some leftover 12 AWG to the pipe. I filled the tank with gas, made sure I filled the crankcase with oil (be careful where you do this since there is most likely going to be some spillage), connected the ground wire, and fired her up. She started almost immediately and ran smooth (a little loud, but almost no sound inside the house). I connected a couple of power tools and turned them on to test...worked flawlessly.

The hurricane caused us to lose power for 2 days, and this generator saved us from losing hundreds of dollars in frozen food. It ran a freezer, a refrigerator/freezer combo, LCD TV, cable box, Wii, charged cellphones and a Nintendo DSI, and powered cable modem & router, all without a problem. Lasted about 10 hours on a full tank. I was almost sad to get electricity back it worked so well.

I would give it 5 stars, but I can't judge its durability after only using it for 2 days.

Great purchase!, September 2, 2011 By B-Mo

I ordered this generator as the threat of Hurricane Irene approached. We lose power frequently in my neighborhood and I expected to be out of power for a few days. Luckily, we only lost power for about 24 hours, but this generator definitely saved me a lot of money. It powered 2 sump pumps (which were running about ever 2 minutes during the storm), a refrigerator/freezer, an upright freezer, a carbon monoxide detector (I had the generator on my back porch and just wanted to be sure the CO wasn't coming back inside), and a lamp. I am extremely pleased with the unit and have piece of mind knowing I have back-up power for essential appliances.

Great little generator., September 1, 2011 By J. Twardy (NJ USA)
(REAL NAME)

Ordered generator on Wednesday before Huricane Irene to power my sump pump because my basement floods with heavy rain. Had Amazon Prime and for 4 dollars the generator was in my garage on Thursday morning. Added the recommended synthetic oil, gasoline and attached grounding wire. Engine started on first pull and I was set. Lost power Sunday for over two days. Used the generator to power my sump pump, refrigerator and my neighbors sump pump with no problem. Oil needs to be changed initially after 20 hours and then every 50 hours. Not sure if this is neccesary with synthetic oil. Generator was somewhat noisy, but did not keep anyone up at night.

Did The JOB!, August 31, 2011 By HomieDontPlay "djhemp" (Connecticut)

I ordered this generator on the Aug 23rd when I finally felt that the threat of Hurricane Irene was imminent for us here in Connecticut. Our particular part of Southwest CT got hit 2 years ago by a "freak" storm that took down tons of trees and knocked out power for over a week for some. Knowing that, I didn't want to be in the dark in my home.

I received this on Aug 25th via Amazon Prime and it was packaged very well. I took it out, put some Royal Purple (synthetic) in it This baby fired up on the first pull. It did the job and did it well. I put about 30 hours on it and powered all the appliances we needed. It powered sump pump (periodicity), 2 refrigerators, a few cfl's, 50" plasma, dvd surround system, fan, and cell/ipad chargers with NO PROBLEM! To run my oil furnace I had to just turn off 1 refrigerator. It was very light on gas and performed with the advertised 11 hours/4 gals/half-load, and that was with all of those appliances on! My wife wanted to make coffee and our Keurig uses 1500 watts. Again shutting off one refrigerator allowed the power to get a cup a coffee.

I now have peace of mind and would recommend this to anyone who doesn't want to spend a fortune but still needs the comforts of modern day living. The wheel kit is also a great feature and makes it very easy to move.

As far as noise goes, I think this generator is pretty quiet. Compared to the 3 others on my street, mine was the most quiet. Perhaps smaller, but still didn't echo like the neighbors.

Your Generator Needs

To determine whether a generator is appropriate for your needs, you need to first add up the wattage of tools, appliances, and motors you want to run at the same time. Then select a generator with the running wattage rating to match or exceed the total load.

Keep in mind that tools and appliances with electric motors require additional surge wattage at startup that can be double or triple the normal running wattage requirement. Look at the surge watts required and make sure you choose a generator with enough additional wattage to start them. (And remember that you're typically not starting more than half of the items at the same time.)

Features
  •     4000 Watt Surge/3300 watt continuous
  •     4 Gallon gas tank/8 hour run time
  •     EZ-Pull recoil start
  •     EPA Approved
  •     Automatic low oil shut off

Just in time!!, January 26, 2012 By dean stark (RENTON, WA, US)

I received the generator on a tuesday and we had a snow and ice storm wednesday and thursday. The power went out for two days. It worked perfectly. I could run a heater, refrigerator, TV and some lights. I was so very glad I could stay home with my puppy and tropical plants.

Great Little Generator, January 3, 2012 By Scott C.

I have a small wood shop that I occasionally need an extra shot of power. I live in the Midwest where it typically gets very cold in the winter. I recently ran my 15amp heater and air filter with the generator for about 3 hours one cold day. I received it, filled it up with gas and oil and pulled the recoil starter and it started on the first pull and ran until I shut it off. Another day I ran my shop vac system and table saw on the generator. After a 3 or 4 second surge, the voltage stabilized and ran unabated. This generator is real good up to 3,000 watts. I did trip it when I ran what I estimated to be 3,200 watts connected to it. This included a 15 amp shop lamp, 15 amp heater and 1.5 amp air cleaner. It performs as I need it too and if we ever do have a power outage I can run my fridge and freezer without issue. For the money, this is a great little generator and I would recommend this to any hobbyist who needs and extra boost of power or to the pro needing some work site help with small wattage equipment. BTW..there are lots of forums out there questioning if the generator needs grounded or not. I called the factory rep that sells these locally. He stated he has sold over 500 of these. He has never heard of anyone pounding the 8' rod into the ground. Common sense is the key with anything electric. Don't get it wet, don't use it past what it is suppose to be used for and keep it in good operating condition. I grew up on a farm, we had 6K - 9K generators on the back of our tractors and pick-ups. Never grounded one of them and all of us are alive and kicking.:)..

Excellent buy. Started right up. Purchased the GenTran 30116V 6-Circuit, 30 amp, transfer switch and had it installed. Tested everything under load. Generator handled everything no problem. (furnace(oil, hot air) fridge and lights). Note; Generator has a L5-30 plug rated at 3750 watts, same with the transfer switch. I make sure I don't exceed 3300 watts. Not too many transfer switches out there with that type plug.(L5-30). The transfer switch was the cheapest at [...]

Looks good and it works., September 27, 2011 By CosmoStarMan

Got a super fast delivery on this product. Unpacked it and had to wait a day to check it out. Removing the shipping braces in the bottom of the unit can be tricky because the nuts and bolts are really tight (thats good) but the metal used to make these particular four nuts and bolts is just a little on the soft side and care must be used that a good wrench doesn't strip the shape of the corners on the nuts when removing. Be sure to read the manual prior to starting. I put the unit on the deck and funneled in some oil (It says it holds a quart but be sure you don't overfill with that quart). I then set up a ground wire and installed a quart of gas. I just wanted to do a test run and didn't want to leave gas in the tank when I stowed away the unit. I found my good heavy load extension cord and a double burner hot plate that had been stored in the garage for too many years. Next I set the gas valve to open and put the choke lever to choke, flipped the red rocker switch for engine start / stop operation then moved the breaker flip switch to the on position and pulled the starter cord. One pull with the choke on and it started right up. I flipped the choke to the off position and it was crusing. I hooked up the two burner hot plate and varied out the burner operation as I ran one burner on its limit of med, then the other burner on high and watched both burners get red hot. It would vary the speed of the generator as I tinkered with the hot plate switches. That particular hot plate information show it draws 1750 watts. I had it on most of the time and the quart of gas lasted about 20 minutes under that load. It looks good and it works fine. I didn't order the wheel kit and was able to lift and slide the unit as needed but sat it on another wheeled unit (that I already had)and it works pretty good for now, but I may order the wheels kit and cover later. This unit measures appx. a compact 17.5H x 17.5W x 23.5L and is a neat fit in a cozy corner. (I am currently storing mine in the dining room) The price was $370 with free shipping and it turned out to be a pretty good deal so far.

Shipment arrived a little late but then again everything including FedEx was messed up because of Hurricane Irene. I unboxed this generator. It is easy to lift and move. I didn't purchase the wheel kit and don't plan to. I did not start it as I don't want to put gas in it and leave it for a long period of time. Be sure to get a quart of 10w30 motor oil. It is not supplied. I am hoping that I don't need it, but I am sure it will be great when I do.

Great deal!!, September 12, 2011 By Bill

I paid $269.00 for this generator on amazon and that is an awesome deal even for a no name generator. I would not pay $389.00 for it when you could buy a champion 4000 for $300 this generator is no better than any other cheap brand. However it does the job well and I have a feeling that the price will go back down soon so if you can hold out you might get a better deal.

Love it, September 1, 2011 By Dirt Dog "Slap D" (Mpls, MN)

Ordered. Was skeptical of the price compared to others.

Filled with clean gas, synthetic oil, it and fired up after 6-8 pulls. Takes a few pulls to start, but runs excellent once going. Hooked up a 15 amp power saw to the regular outlet and it ran flawlessly.

A very good buy for the price.

Very nice little power house, September 1, 2011 By General Lee "Billfurd" (California)

I purchased this to prepare for whatever may come. I believe the time to prepare is now not later when it's to late. I received it 2 days after ordering it, and found that it was mailed from the company which is not far from me in Northern CA. They had it delivered Fed Ex which is great because they don't sit on freight like UPS does. This is a very nice generator and not as large as I pictured it being. The oil fill is in a place where you will need to purchase a bendable funnel to fill it, but it really isn't anything to downgrade the product over. I can lift it and carry it by the bars on top but it weighs around 90+ pounds and not everybody will be able to move it, but I can do it fine, but I will get the wheel kit because my father always told me to work smart if possible and work hard otherwise. It has a gas gauge on top and a voltmeter on the side and has a pull start and a switch start which I didn't know by the discription or maybe I missed a couple of things. I am very happy with this purchase and I bought it a day before it jumped a hundred dollars in price. Win Win!! It started right up and for the amount of power it gives off was not as loud as I expected. The only thing that would have made it an excellent purchase is if it was made in the U.S,A because it's made in China I can plan on it not lasting as long because of their cheaper metal and lower quality standards.
